Plumes of dust hung in the air as our convoy of armored vehicles crawled along the broad valley floor. As we approached the watchtowers and steel gates of Fort Gormach, a firefight with the Taliban broke out high on the steep hills along our left flank. A day later, we held up our departure while American F-16s dived on Taliban positions, which had taken U.S. and Afghan forces under fire.
