Oil for Lockerbie Terrorist's Freedom? Senators Suspect BP 'Blood Money' Role

Four U.S. senators have called on oil giant BP to halt its plans to drill for oil off the coast of Libya until questions about possible terrorist connections behind the company's drilling contracts there have been resolved. "The more we learn about the [matter] in recent days, the more it makes the stomach turn," Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said at a Capitol Hill press conference Wednesday. BP confirmed Thursday that it lobbied the U.K. government to speed up the release of Libyan prisoners in order to finalize an drilling agreement with Libya, but denied that it tried to intervene in ...

One month, one week and one day remain until Senate confirmation hearings begin for Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court. Kagan continued her round of meetings with senators on Thursday, meeting with Republicans Olympia Snowe of Maine and Judd Gregg of New Hampshire as well as Democrats Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Barbara Boxer of California. After a nearly hour-long meeting with Kagan, Snowe praised her temperament and qualifications, adding that she'll continue evaluating Kagan's views and writings and that Kagan's ...

Sen. Frank Lautenberg Diagnosed With Stomach Cancer

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D--N.J.) has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, but is expected to have a full recovery, his office announced Friday afternoon. The 86-year-old Lautenberg was admitted to a New Jersey hospital earlier this week. His spokesperson said then that the senator had fallen at his New Jersey home Monday when he became lightheaded, and would remain in the hospital to be treated for a bleeding ulcer. Today, spokesperson Caley Gray said that further testing had revealed a more serious, but still treatable, condition. "After several days of hospitalization and testing, Senator ...

Senators' Thanksgiving Chores: McCain: 'I'm Frying Two Turkeys!'

Senators may have assistants in Washington to do their correspondence and driving, but once they get home, many are more likely to be taking orders than giving them, especially when Thanksgiving dinner needs to get on the table. From three hours of dusting to whipping up a batch of sauerkraut, here are the surprising answers the Capitolist got when we asked senators, "Are you cooking for Thanksgiving this year?" Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.): Yes! I fry turkeys. I fry two turkeys. One you can eat then and one you can eat later. I still haven't burned the porch off. We have a place up in northern ...

Mayor of 9/11 for Senator from NJ?

New Jersey's very senior senator, Democrat Frank Lautenberg, is up for re-election this year. Three Republican rivals were vying for the nomination that will be decided in the state primary in June. The candidate considered to have the best chance against Lautenberg, Monmouth Co. businesswoman Anne Evans Estabrook, dropped out of the race last week due to a mini-stroke. The NJ state GOP officials don't seem to have much faith in the chances of the two remaining candidates, state Senator Joe Pennacchio and Ramapo College professor Murray Sabrin (endorsed by Ron Paul!). Former NY Yankee and ...

Estabrook Drops U.S. Senate Bid

For those of you suffering from presidential primary fatigue and who are simply sick of Hillary v. Barack, I thought I'd offer up a bit of news about a U.S. Senate race. There's a contest going on in New Jersey to oust four-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg. State Sen. Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris County) and Murray Sabrin - leader of Republican Rep. Ron Paul's presidential campaign in the Garden State - are vying for the Republican nomination to run against Lautenberg, who is 84 years old. Up until this week, businesswoman Anna Estabrook was also in the ring, but, after suffering a ...
