One of the individuals who spoke was Zach Wahls, a University of Iowa engineering student and the child of a same-sex couple. California voters approved Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment limiting marriage to a man and a woman, in the 2008 elections. Televised Gay Marriage Hearing Draws Wide Audience

SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 6) -- The legal fight over California's gay marriage ban went before a federal appeals court Monday in a hearing that reached a nationwide TV audience anxious for a final decision on whether the measure violates the U.S. Constitution. The hearing before a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also focused on whether supporters of voter-approved Proposition 8 have legal standing to challenge a lower court ruling that the ban was unconstitutional. The judges did not issue an immediate ruling and no timetable has been set. Jeff Chiu, AP From left, ...

After a Dissent, Mormon Leaders Reaffirm Stance Against Gay Marriage

(Oct. 4) -- Last month, a senior leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apologized for the Mormon church's involvement in California's campaign in favor of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlaws gay marriage. "On the morning of Sunday, September 19, about ninety members of the Oakland, California stake (diocese) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met with Elder Marlin K. Jensen, the Church's historian and a prominent member of the General Authorities, the ranking hierarchy of Mormon leaders," reports Joanna Brooks of Religion Dispatches magazine. ...

How the Target Boycott Made Me Rethink My Patriotism

How the Target Boycott Made Me Rethink My Patriotism

LONDON -- When you live abroad for a long time, you tend to identify certain cultural objects that anchor you with a sense of home. They are the things that -- for better or for worse -- come to signify "America." It might be a diner that serves all-day brunch. Or the blissful simplicity of a tumble dryer. Or -- depending on your politics -- the meteoric rise of a Mama Grizzly politician or a musician for whom the public is Gaga. For me, that cultural touchstone has always been Target, the iconic superstore of highways and strip malls across America, where you can buy everything from ...

Prop. 8 Overturned: Read Judge Walker's Full Decision Here

(Aug. 4) -- In a historic ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker on Wednesday struck down California's Proposition 8, which defined marriage in the state as being solely between a man and a woman. "Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same sex couples," Walker's ruling stated. Here is the full ruling, via LGBT news blog Good As You: Prop 8 ...

Judge: Federal Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

Judge: Federal Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

BOSTON (July 9) - A U.S. judge in Boston has ruled that a federal gay marriage ban is unconstitutional because it interferes with the right of a state to define marriage. U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro on Thursday ruled in favor of gay couples' rights in two separate challenges to the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA. The state had argued the law denied benefits such as Medicaid to gay married couples in Massachusetts, where same-sex unions have been legal since 2004. Tauro agreed, and said the act forces Massachusetts to discriminate against its own citizens. "The federal ...

Proposition 8 Trial: Plaintiffs' Closing Arguments [QUOTES]

The long, hard-fought battle over gay marriage in the state of California is finally winding down today (again) as attorneys on both sides of the case over the constitutionality of Proposition 8 make their closing arguments. Arguing for the Plaintiffs, attorney Theodore B. Olson said: "The fundamental right to marriage has been taken away from the plaintiffs and tens of thousands. Their state has stigmatized them as unworthy of marriage," according to BusinessWeek. Later, San Fransisco attorney Therese Stewart argued that: "Evidence of cost to government are symptomatic of harm that Prop. 8 ...

Opinion: New Approach Needed to Advance Gay Rights

(Dec. 3) - In the immediate aftermath of the passage of California's Proposition 8 last fall -- where voters amended the state's constitution to recognize only marriages between one man and one woman -- there was a lot of finger-pointing in the gay community, but no bloodletting. Leaders of all the major gay organizations kept their jobs, including the leader of the one organization dedicated to promoting gay marriage and the head of the leading gay rights group in the Golden State. Well, Patrick Sammon, head of Log Cabin Republicans, did announce his retirement, but he was resigning for ...
