Obama on Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell Repeal: 'We've Never Been Closer'

Obama on Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell Repeal: 'We've Never Been Closer'

President Obama told gay activists Tuesday night that "we have never been closer" to repealing the ban on permitting openly gay men and woman to serve in the U.S. military. The House passed legislation last month that would overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which requires gay members of the armed services to keep their sexual orientation private. The policy was enacted under President Clinton and replaced an outright prohibition on gays serving in the military. Obama asserted that "forcing gay and lesbian soldiers to live a lie or to leave the military" harms national security. ...

Testy GOP, Heckler Confront Obama on Immigration, Energy, Gay Rights

Testy GOP, Heckler Confront Obama on Immigration, Energy, Gay Rights

President Obama says his meeting with Senate Republicans Tuesday was "warm and fuzzy" -- but he was kidding. By most accounts the private luncheon left both sides testy and accomplished little in the way of promoting bipartisanship. Obama talked about his let's-have-lunch date with Republicans later Tuesday during a fundraiser in California, where he had to deal with a heckler who complained that the president was not moving quickly enough to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" restriction on gays serving openly in the military. The repeal bill is expected to come up later this week in the ...

Constance McMillen's South: Land of Sex and Sin

Constance McMillen's South: Land of Sex and Sin

"What's happened to the Bible Belt?" That question was written on a poster plastered on Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Miss., after Constance McMillen, a lesbian high school student, wanted to take her girlfriend to the spring prom. This weekend, Constance will attend the Second Chance Prom. Its purpose is to create a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and allies, "where everyone feels comfortable being themselves." This is a huge event for several reasons. But the main one: it's out in the open in Tupelo, Miss. – home of the American Family ...

Gay-Rights Protesters Disrupt Obama Speech in L.A.

Gay-Rights Protesters Disrupt Obama Speech in L.A.

A handful of gay-rights protesters, demanding the repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members, disrupted President Barack Obama's speech at a fundraising event for Sen. Barbara Boxer in Los Angeles on Monday night. "Repeal 'don't ask, don't tell,' " one person shouted out, as Obama was extolling Boxer's record on jobs and families. "We are going to do that," Obama immediately replied, raising his voice. "Hey, hold on a second, hold on a second. We are going to do that." The president's supporters jumped in, chanting, "Yes we can," the old battle cry from his 2008 campaign. But ...

First Day for Same Sex Marriage Licenses Under New D.C. Law

First Day for Same Sex Marriage Licenses Under New D.C. Law

More than 100 same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses in the nation's capital on Wednesday as the District of Columbia officially joined five states in allowing gay mariage. Many of the couples lined up outside on a cold, rainy day waiting for the marriage bureau at the D.C. Superior Court to open on the first day of eligibility for same-sex applications under a new law. No marriages can be performed until Tuesday at the earliest as it takes three days to process the paperwork, the Washington Post reported. Couples exchanged hugs and cupcakes and many headed off to work after filling ...

After Anti-Gay Cartoon, How Will Notre Dame Respond to Outcry?

After Anti-Gay Cartoon, How Will Notre Dame Respond to Outcry?

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame's student newspaper made national headlines when it printed an anti-gay comic strip on Jan. 13. The backlash was vocal, intense and deserved -- the comic depicted one character asking another how to turn a "fruit" into a "vegetable." The response: "a baseball bat." On campus, the response has also been adamant -- in support of the LGBT members of Notre Dame's student body, faculty and staff. And as a result of the incident, a group of students and faculty has launched several new initiatives. The burgeoning movement on this Catholic campus ...

'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Discharges Plunge

'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Discharges Plunge

(Feb. 5) -- Momentum is building to let openly gay Americans serve in the military, and Defense Department figures show the number of service members booted out for violating the "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) policy has dropped sharply in recent years. President Barack Obama pledged in his State of the Union speech to end the policy that began as a compromise between the Pentagon and President Bill Clinton, who wanted to drop the rule against gays in the military. Under DADT, gays and lesbians are allowed to serve if they keep their sexual orientation secret. More than 13,000 men and women ...

Obama Vows Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Obama Vows Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

(Jan. 27) -- It was just one sentence, buried deep within the State of the Union address. But for gay rights advocates who have been less than enthralled with President Barack Obama in the past year, they at least made the cut. "This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are," Obama said. Obama's pledge comes after a year of mixed blessings for gay rights supporters, who have criticized the president for ignoring or moving too slowly on their issues. The president's ...

Cindy McCain Poses for Ad Supporting Gay Marriage

Cindy McCain Poses for Ad Supporting Gay Marriage

Cindy McCain has posed for an ad released by the NOH8 campaign, a pro-gay-marriage effort that pictures celebrities with their mouths taped shut, the Associated Press reports. McCain appears in the usual format: dressed in white, with "NOH8" painted on her cheek and silver duct tape across her mouth. (H8 refers to the ballot measure passed by California voters in 2008 banning same-sex marriage.) The ad was a surprise to some, since John McCain opposed gay marriage during his 2008 presidential run, and his wife rarely speaks out on particular issues. McCain's office issued a statement saying ...

Anti-Homosexuality Bill Creates Rift Between American and Ugandan Christians

Anti-Homosexuality Bill Creates Rift Between American and Ugandan Christians

As American Christian leaders come out against a bill in Uganda that would institute the death penalty for certain homosexual activity, a rift is growing with their African brethren. Ugandan Christians overwhelmingly support the law and, as Christianity Today reports, are questioning the integrity of the American Christians trying to stop it.Homosexuality is already illegal in Uganda, but the proposed act would mandate a seven-year prison term for anyone who has gay sex or "attempts to commit the offense" of homosexuality, and anyone who fails to report homosexuals within 24 hours of ...
