Robonaut to Join Astronauts for Space Mission

"Warning, warning, Will Robinson!" Ah, the phrase heard around the galaxy from the classic 1960s television series, "Lost in Space." It was the voice of the boy's mechanical pal trying to keep the young Robinson aware of some sort of approaching threat. And now, NASA is about to launch its long-awaited robotic companion to astronauts in space: Robonaut 2. In a unique partnership, NASA and General Motors have come together to develop a new generation of robots for both the automotive and aerospace industries. ...

Best Second Acts of 2010: The Clintons, Lisa Murkowski (and Betty White!)

Best Second Acts of 2010: The Clintons, Lisa Murkowski (and Betty White!)

Second acts. Comebacks. Reinventions. Whatever you call them, tales of former greats who've crawled their way back are perhaps the most satisfying and inspiring stories of the season. Because if they can do it, maybe so can we. Five candidates for Best Second Act of 2010: Bill and Hillary Clinton: At certain times the 1990s, it would have been hard to find two more reviled politicians. Hillary's raw ambition unhinged conservatives, and they never forgave her for HillaryCare. When Bill strayed, Hillary haters would look you in the eye and ask what choice the poor man had. She was lampooned ...

The Thanksgiving of Our Dreams: Open Your Eyes, It's Right Here

The Thanksgiving of Our Dreams: Open Your Eyes, It's Right Here

Hey, 2010: We've made it this far, and that deserves a lot of thanksgiving. Politics is part of how we got here. Part of the good. Part of the bad. Part of our American dream. Part of politics we can be thankful for now is the SHUT UP factor. Listen to your lives. Do you hear it? Maybe not the sounds of silence, because the shouting never stops in modern America. But now the volume of political shouting is dialed-down because our latest electoral brawl is over -- except for random re-counts, court challenges, simple twists of fate and Congress's "lame duck" soup. Now, driving home ...

Obama in Kokomo Makes Case for the Economy, Bipartisanship on Bush Tax Cuts

By  Alex Wagner - Politics Daily
Obama in Kokomo Makes Case for the Economy, Bipartisanship on Bush Tax Cuts

Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden traveled to a Chrysler plant in Kokomo, Ind., on Tuesday to tout the resurrection of the American auto industry and make the case for their administration's handling of the economy. Highlighting the resuscitation of the plant from near-death to full capacity, Obama suggested the factory was a model for the rest of the country, and asserted, "We are moving in the right direction." But the president warned that progress on other important economic issues, including the Bush tax cuts, which are to expire at ...

Obama Touts GM as Recession 'Success Story'

Breaking sharply from his defensive crouch following this month's electoral "shellacking," President Obama took a moment to celebrate some hard-won success on Thursday. The president championed his administration's decision to rescue the troubled U.S. auto industry last spring, pointing to General Motors' initial public offering (IPO) of its stock -- one of the largest IPOs in American history. "Today, one of the toughest tales of the recession took another big step towards becoming a success story," said the president. ...

GM Is Back on the Board, but How Much Did It Cost?

GM Is Back on the Board, but How Much Did It Cost?

(Nov. 18) -- Trading under the ticker symbol "GM," General Motors returned to the marketplace today with shares hovering around $35 for most of the day, besting expectations and boosting U.S. stocks. If all continues to go well, this year should mark GM's first full-year profit since 2004. From 2005 to 2009, the company lost $88 billion before filing for bankruptcy last year, Business Insider reported. Since 2008, the company has received bailout money from governments worldwide. So now that stocks are up, are GM and its employees in the clear? Surge Desk takes a look at the bailout by the ...

General Motors Stock Jumps After Return to Wall Street

NEW YORK (Nov. 18) -- General Motors stock began trading on Wall Street again Thursday, signaling the rebirth of an American corporate icon that collapsed into bankruptcy and was rescued with a $50 billion infusion from taxpayers. The stock rose sharply in its first minutes of buying and selling, going for nearly $36 per share - almost $3 more than the price GM set for the initial public offering. The stock pulled back slightly by early afternoon and closed at $34.19. It had traded for less than a dollar when the old company filed for bankruptcy last year. On the floor of the New York Stock ...

Who Deserves Credit for GM's Revival?

(Nov. 17) -- Punctuating an astonishing turnaround, General Motors will offer its stock to the public Thursday in what could be the biggest IPO in U.S. history. As investors line up to place their bets, it's striking to think that just 16 months ago the automaker was on its deathbed. With that in mind, who deserves credit for GM's revival? Business writers wrestle it out: It's an Amazing Turnaround Story, writes Halah Touryalai at Forbes: GM stock has become such a hot item that underwriters stopped taking orders for the IPO yesterday, which was more than seven times oversubscribed, ...

Good News on GM and the Auto Bailout, but Will Americans Care?

Good News on GM and the Auto Bailout, but Will Americans Care?

If this week follows the normal pattern, the public stock offering Thursday by a resurgent General Motors will not be seen as evidence that presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama made wise decisions to help the tanking auto industry. No, it will probably just remind Americans that the federal government is really, really big these days. That is, of course, true. In part it's true because of two protracted wars and the money the government has spent to stabilize an economy that two years ago was in a stomach-lurching freefall. It seems true because of new regulations to reorganize the ...

General Motors Posts $2 Billion Third-Quarter Profit

(Nov. 10) -- General Motors reported Wednesday that it earned $2 billion in the third quarter, marking its most profitable quarter yet since emerging from bankruptcy last year. On a per-share basis, GM said it earned $1.20 a share, after adjusting for a 3-for-1 stock split, on revenue of $34 billion. Net cash flow from operations was $2.6 billion.
