In Havana, Trial Opens for American Accused of Threatening Cuba's Independence

A U.S. government contractor charged with committing acts threatening Cuba's independence has gone on trial in Havana in a controversial case that has become a thorny political issue between the Castro regime and Washington. The contractor, Alan Phillip Gross, 61, is accused of illegally distributing sophisticated satellite communications equipment for Internet access under an American program that is outlawed and considered subversive by the Cuban government. He faces a possible 20-year sentence for "acts against the integrity and independence" of Cuba. Related ...

Obama's Workout White House: Democrats as Fitness Fanatics

When John Kennedy tried to sell the therapeutic virtues of 50-mile hikes to a sedentary nation, the president's chosen guinea pig was his own well-padded press secretary, Pierre Salinger. A man whose idea of exercise was teeing off on the golf course with a fat cigar in his mouth, Salinger stoutly resisted JFK's summons to a New Frontier in physical exertion. "I may be plucky," Salinger said, "but I ain't stupid." Salinger was lucky – he worked for a president who could take no for an answer without working up a sweat. In the Obama White House, the near-mandatory regimen appears to be ...

Suspected Terror Plotter's Targets Included Home of George W. Bush

A 20-year-old Saudi man studying in Texas has been arrested and accused of amassing bomb components and compiling a list of possible targets, including nuclear power plants and the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, who attended South Plains College near Lubbock, was charged with attempting to build and use a weapon of mass destruction, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The FBI said Aldawsari apparently has no links to international terrorist organizations. He is in the U.S. on a 2008 student visa. Aldawsari allegedly kept a detailed journal ...

Floyd Mayweather, Bob Arum, Together Again -- If Only Briefly

Unbeaten six-time titlist Floyd Mayweather and Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum, and, his stepson, Top Rank President, Todd duBoef, were reunited if only for a few hours as they watched Sunday's Super Bowl in Arlington, Tex., as guests from the suite of Cowboys' owner, Jerry Jones, at The Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The news was first reported by BoxingScene.com. Mayweather turned pro with Top Rank Promotions in 1996, but angrily severed ties with Arum's company in 2006. Since then, Mayweather (41-0, 25 knockouts) has aligned himself with rival promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, which has ...

No Cheerleaders at Super Bowl XLV -- Sad Day for Tradition

No Cheerleaders at Super Bowl XLV -- Sad Day for Tradition

Confession: I once owned a pair of pom-poms. Back in the 1970s, at age 4, it seemed the right thing to ask my parents for as a gift. The fluffy red and white pom-poms were official and expensive -- cheap just wouldn't do for my nascent cheerleading career. I shook them during college football games and at least one Super Bowl. But little girls hoping for cheering inspiration at Sunday's Super Bowl XLV game in Dallas between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers won't get it. For the first time in the Super Bowl's 45-year history, there will be no cheerleaders on the ...

Super Bowl XLV: Is Everything Bigger and Better in Dallas?

Super Bowl XLV: Is Everything Bigger and Better in Dallas?

If there's a point at which sports and money, politics and high living intersect, it is the Super Bowl. Presidents, governors, mayors, glad-handers and boosters -- all get drawn into the whirlwind of the Super Bowl circus. This year is no different. And if there's one place where sports and politics, money and high living mix and match, it is Dallas, which for the first time ever is hosting the big game. For one thing, there's George W. Bush, the former president and Texas Rangers owner who makes his home in Dallas. Bush is building a presidential library on the campus of Southern Methodist ...

George W. Bush: I'm Done With Politics

Republican candidates hoping for some high-profile help on the campaign trail next year shouldn't look to George W. Bush. The former president told C-SPAN he's done with politics and all its trappings. "I don't want to go out and campaign for candidates," he told Brian Lamb in an interview airing this weekend. "I don't want to be viewed as a perpetual money-raiser." Bush said he's not interested in making television appearances and made it clear that the C-SPAN sitdown was an anomoly. "In spite of the fact that I'm now on TV, I don't want to be on TV," he said. Bush said he doesn't think ...

Report on Bush-Era Politicking Underscores Need for Hatch Act Reform

Report on Bush-Era Politicking Underscores Need for Hatch Act Reform

The good news about the Office of Special Counsel's lengthy and detailed report on Bush-era politicking at the White House is that creates a detailed historical record of the ways in which federal employees back then violated both the letter and the spirit of the Hatch Act, the federal statute designed to limit the ways in which federal employees may participate in partisan political activities. The bad news about the OSC Report is that it took nearly four years to complete, the culprits are now nowhere near the White House, and the Hatch Act itself provides no legal remedies that could be ...

Gabby Giffords: A Moderate Voice in Extreme Times

Only three days after she was sworn in at the 112th Congress, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, a moderate Democrat who barely overcame strong Tea Party opposition to win a third term, was at the center of a horrific shooting Saturday in her hometown of Tucson, where she was holding a casual meeting with voters in the parking lot of a Safeway supermarket. Condi Rice: Pro-Choice, Libertarian . . . and Evangelical

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared in a recent interview that she is proudly evangelical but also distanced herself from many of her fellow believers by saying that she tends to support abortion rights and civil unions for gay couples, and she feels evangelicals too often alienate others with in-your-face rhetoric. "It's extremely important not to assault people," Rice told Christianity Today, the flagship evangelical magazine, in a Dec. 20 interview. "Sometimes I think evangelicals come at people so hard and so fast and don't take time to listen to where somebody is," she ...
