Nebraska Bill Would Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks

Nebraska Bill Would Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks

(Feb. 25) -- Nebraska lawmakers have found a new tactic in the fight against abortion: If a fetus can feel pain, they say, it cannot be aborted. So they are moving forward with the Abortion Pain Prevention Act, a bill aimed at ending the "substantial pain" to the "unborn child" caused by abortion. If the bill passes, the state will become the first in the country to forbid abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy unless the mother's life is threatened. If the bill passes, it likely will be challenged in the Supreme Court. The vast majority of abortions, just under 90 percent, take place before ...

Jury Convicts Scott Roeder of Murdering Abortionist George Tiller

A jury in Wichita, Kan., convicted Scott Roeder for the murder of George Tiller, one of the few doctors performing late-term abortions in the United States, the Los Angeles Times reports. The jury of seven men and five women reached a verdict after only 37 minutes of deliberation, and also convicted Roeder on two counts of aggravated assault for threats to ushers at the church where he committed the crime. Roeder faces life in prison for the first-degree murder conviction. Roeder confessed to killing Tiller during a church service in May of last year, telling the story to reporters, law ...

Will Trial of George Tiller's Killer Increase Violence?

By  Martha Burk - Politics Daily
Will Trial of George Tiller's Killer Increase Violence?

The Kansas of the 1870s was one in which guns ruled as the likes of Jesse James and the Dalton Gang roamed the streets packing heat and using it when they felt like it. The good citizens of Wichita are no doubt glad those days are now just part of the lore of the Wild West. Or are they? Sedgwick County District Court Judge Warren Wilbert is the Kansas jurist presiding over the trial of Scott Roeder, who has admitted to shooting Dr. George Tiller, owner one of the few late-term abortion clinics in the country. Roeder has openly stated that his opposition to abortion is the reason he gunned ...

'Necessity Defense' Allowed in Abortion Doctor Murder Trial

'Necessity Defense' Allowed in Abortion Doctor Murder Trial

The man accused of killing a Kansas abortion provider during a church service will be allowed to testify he believed the death was justified to save the lives of the unborn, but a judge still has to decide whether the jury will be allowed to consider that argument. The trial of Scott Roeder, 51, began in Wichita Wednesday with Judge Warren Wilbert siding with defense lawyers who want to be able to mention Roeder's anti-abortion motives, ABC News reported. Prosecutors had hoped to block the use of the so-called "necessity defense."If Roeder can convince jurors that the death of Dr. George ...

The Top 10 Religion/Politics Stories of '09: Catholicism at the Fore; Niebuhr's Reemergence

Despite America's legal wall between church and state, the mixing of faith and politics is all but unavoidable. This past year was typical in the number of major stories with aspects of religion that had powerful public-policy and cultural implications. David Gibson and I, who filter the news stream for faith 'n' values items here at Politics Daily, have produced our top 10 list of religion-politics stories for 2009. We make no claim of infallibility, of course. Feel free to weigh in with your opinions in the comments section. But please, let's be civil out there. ...

EBay Removes Drawings That Glorify Slaying of Abortion Doctor George Tiller

EBay has removed an auction posted by supporters of Scott Roeder, the man charged with the May murder of abortionist George Tiller. The listing featured graphic prison art celebrating the murder, and was an effort to raise money for Roeder's legal defense. The Kansas City Star first reported the auction, and TPM Muckraker captured the series of images: a drawing of Tiller beheaded, and several of the grave stones of aborted babies. As of late Monday morning, links to the auction returned a message saying the listing had been removed. The popular online site had implied it would not permit ...

Ann Coulter on O'Reilly: Tiller Murder a 'Termination'

Ann Coulter on O'Reilly: Tiller Murder a 'Termination'

Media personality Ann Coulter appeared on Bill O'Reilly's television program this week to discuss the murder of late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller. Never one to shy away from controversy, Coulter offered the following ethical assessment of the crime: "I don't really like to think of it as a murder. It was terminating Tiller in the 203rd trimester." When pressed by O'Reilly on this statement, Coulter replied, "I am personally opposed to shooting abortionists, but I don't want to impose my moral values on others." Here's the clip in context. The salient portion occurs at the 3:35 ...

Post-Tiller, Pro-Life Movement Lives On

Post-Tiller, Pro-Life Movement Lives On

It would be easy to assume that the murder last Sunday of Dr. George Tiller in the sanctuary of his Kansas church would slow the momentum of the pro-life movement, even in the short term. After all, one man had killed another in the name of defending life. But Scott Roeder, the man charged in Tiller's murder, was never one of them, said Jim Sedlak, vice president of the American Life Network, a grassroots, Catholic pro-life organization. "The mainstream, pro-life movement does not condone this in any way whatsoever." Just as they did last year, members of ALL will stand in front of Planned ...
