Democrat Doug Heckman is a West Point graduate who rose to the rank of colonel in the Army Special Forces. He is a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Heckman has worked as an executive for several financial services firms. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008 against Republican incumbent John Linder, who is retiring this year.

Republican Rob Woodall began working for Rep. John Linder, whose seat he hopes to fill, in 1994 and has been his chief of staff since 2000.
