Georgia Elections

Georgia

With Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue unable to run again because of term limits, the man he beat eight years ago is trying to get his old job back. Former Gov. Roy Barnes is the Democratic nominee. The battle for the Republican spot on the ballot dragged out for weeks beyond the July 20 primary. In an Aug. 10 runoff, ex-congressman Nathan Deal edged out Georgia's former Secretary of State Karen Handel. Deal was backed by Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee while Handel won endorsements from Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney.Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson appears to be assured of winning a second term. There are 13 House races on Georgia's ballot but the balance of power for the state's congressional delegation isn't likely to change. The lone open House seat, in the 7th District, is expected to remain Democratic. McCain won Georgia in 2008.
