Black Conservatives Voice Support for Glenn Beck Rally

Black Conservatives Voice Support for Glenn Beck Rally

Glenn Beck's "Rally to Restore Honor," set for Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, has stirred controversy because of it's timing (the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech) and its location (the same spot where King delivered that speech). While plenty of people are also questioning Beck's motives, some black conservatives have been outspoken in their support. Alveda King -- Martin Luther King's niece -- will participate in the rally. She recently wrote: "When I join Beck and all gathered at the Lincoln Memorial this weekend, I will talk about my ...

Bizarre Deep-Sea Creatures Spotted in Australia

(July 16) -- Australian scientists using high-tech cameras at record depths have captured photos of never-before-seen deep-sea creatures under the Great Barrier Reef that are believed to have existed there since prehistoric times. The photos offer a fascinating glimpse of marine life in deep dark waters more than 4,500 feet below the ocean's surface. Among the bizarre species believed to have been discovered are giant six-gilled sharks, an octopus relative that lives in a shell and swarms of new crustaceans that look like they're straight out of a science fiction movie. ...

Queen Elizabeth Visits UN, Ground Zero in NYC Tour

UNITED NATIONS (July 6) -- In her first address to the U.N. General Assembly in more than half a century, England's Queen Elizabeth II urged the world body to provide leadership on global challenges like climate change, poverty and terrorism, stressing that "so much remains to be done." At the same time, in her eight-minute address the queen acknowledged that the United Nations had taken big strides in its humanitarian and peacekeeping missions in the past six decades. She last addressed the General Assembly in 1957, when she was 31 -- four years after being crowned. "When I was first here ...

Coast Guard's Icebreaker Fleet Frozen in Port

SAN FRANCISCO (June 30) -- The U.S. Coast Guard won't have any heavy icebreakers available for polar operations for at least six months because of mechanical breakdowns in its small, aging fleet, officials say. The Polar Sea, one of the Coast Guard's two heavy icebreakers, suffered extensive engine problems, which likely will take until next year to repair. The Polar Sea's sister ship, the Polar Star, is undergoing a major refitting, which will be completed in 2013. Dana Goward, director of the Coast Guard Office of Assessment, Integration and Risk Management, said Tuesday that the lack of ...

Senate Votes Not to Block EPA on Greenhouse Gas Limits

Senate Votes Not to Block EPA on Greenhouse Gas Limits

In a close call for the environmental movement, the Senate refused to go along with an Alaskan senator's bid to block the EPA from limiting greenhouse gas emissions under authority of the existing Clean Air law. The 53-47 vote Thursday not to rein in the Obama administration agency cheered enviros but disappointed energy state senators, who fear the EPA, on its own, will impose rules restricting carbon dioxide and other pollutants at coal-fired power plants, oil refineries and some manufacturing facilities. The impact, they say, would also curb mining and other production activities. ...

Climate Scientists Urge Aggressive Action to Curb Global Warming

Climate Scientists Urge Aggressive Action to Curb Global Warming

In what's being called "the most comprehensive report ever on climate change," the National Academy of Sciences urged aggressive action to curb global warming, including a cap-and-trade program and taxes on carbon emissions. Three studies requested by Congress issued Wednesday provide the broad outlines for a national strategy to deal with climate change, The Los Angeles Times reported. Two more studies are still to come. Bold actions are necessary because "climate change is occurring, the Earth is warming ... concentrations of carbon dioxide are increasing, and there are very clear ...

Kerry, Lieberman in New Push for Energy Bill

In the last gasp for an energy bill, Sens. John Kerry and Joe Lieberman offered a plan Wednesday that promotes clean energy and nuclear power, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent over the next decade, and allows coastal states to veto federally leased drilling projects within 75 miles of their shores. Kerry said stakes for the bill are "sky high," the AP reported. It faces an uphill climb in gaining passage this year, with little or no GOP backing at this point. But the Massachusetts Democrat said he would press ahead and remains hopeful that Republican Lindsey Graham of ...

Environmental Wake-Up Call Looming in Pakistan

(April 22) -- For the past month, Ismail Siddiqui has watched disaster hanging over him. "It's one thing to see everything you own destroyed in an earthquake," the 45-year-old father of four tells AOL News. "But to wake up every morning not knowing whether today will be the end. ... It's driving me crazy." What Siddiqui is watching is an artificial dam created by a massive landslide in Pakistan's northern Hunza Valley in January. His house is situated just downstream from the dam, along the banks of the Hunza River. Water has been collecting behind the massive pile of rock debris for ...

Opinion: Earth Day at 40 -- Looking Ahead

(April 22) -- Earth Day is a great time to come together to celebrate our environmental successes. It's hard to believe it's been 40 years since the first one. Our country has seen a string of incredible environmental triumphs over the past 40 years. Citizens from across the country have repeatedly come together to demand better -- and we've gotten it in many cases. I can think of two major highlights very quickly: the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Our skies are cleaner than they were 40 years ago, as is our water. These successes should serve as a great inspiration to us as we ...

Obama's Deep-Space Plan Puts NASA on a Bold Course

Obama's Deep-Space Plan Puts NASA on a Bold Course

It's been nearly 41 years since NASA, after a series of technological small steps (not to mention a few missteps) and giant leaps, was able to fulfill President John F. Kennedy's seemingly far-fetched promise: to put a man on the moon within the decade. Since then, though, NASA's directive has been less clear. Should it concentrate again on the moon to understand it better? Should its sights be trained on goals closer to home, on earth and environmental science? Or perhaps it should be looking much farther afield, toward the final frontier -- deep space? ...
