Feds Deploy More Radiation Monitors in Western US

SAN FRANCISCO -- Growing concern by Americans over exposure from damaged nuclear plants in Japan has prompted officials to deploy more radiation monitors in the western United States and Pacific territories, federal environmental regulators say. Officials with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said they do not expect harmful radiation levels to reach anywhere in the U.S. from Japan. "The agency decided out of an abundance of caution to send these deployable monitors in order to get some monitors on the ground closer to Japan," Jonathan Edwards, director of the U.S. Environmental ...

30 International Rescue Teams Mobilized for 'Terrified' Japan

As the world watched horrifying images of a giant wave washing over northeastern Japan like a sledgehammer from the sea, the U.N. said that rescue teams from at least 30 countries were poised to help with the fallout from today's 8.9 earthquake. Unconfirmed reports now say that hundreds have been killed or injured in one of the worst earthquakes ever recorded. Those numbers are expected to grow. Four million homes around Tokyo alone were without electricity. Aerial images showed a dark wall of water, reportedly 32-feet high, hurtling across Japan, swallowing cars, boats and buildings as if ...

Missing Boat With 5 Americans Lands in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines -- Five Americans stepped ashore in good health Monday in the central Philippines following an international search for their sailboat when it failed to arrive on time in its voyage from the Pacific island of Guam, officials said. The vessel, called the Pineapple, ran into bad weather after departing from Guam on Jan. 6 on a journey to the Philippines and relatives of the crew - four men and a woman - reported them missing Jan. 18. A Philippine coast guard ship reached the 38-foot (11-meter) catamaran on Sunday after it was spotted by plane the previous day. Rescuers ...

Similac Recalled After Beetles Found in Formula

(Sept. 22) -- It's not exactly like Mom used to make. Abbott Laboratories today issued a recall of nearly 5 million units of Similac baby formula after consumers reported finding beetles and their larvae in the powdered breast milk substitute. An inspection of the Sturgis, Mich., plant where the formula is manufactured confirmed the contamination. Production at the plant has been halted while it is treated for the infestation, CNN reported. What, exactly, is being recalled? Approximately 5 million units of powdered Similac that is packaged in plastic containers, as well as 8-ounce, ...

Northern Mariana Islands Support Arizona Immigrant Law, But Why?

(July 15) -- Nine states announced today that they were filing a legal brief in support of Arizona's controversial immigration law. Surprisingly, the Northern Mariana Islands, a remote South Pacific commonwealth of the U.S. government, decided to join them. Word that the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) was hopping on the pro-Arizona bandwagon got Surge Desk wondering: Does CNMI really have a dog in this fight? The decision to join the full-fledged states of Michigan, Florida, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Alabama, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia was made by CNMI ...

Congressman Worries Guam Could Capsize

Congressman Worries Guam Could Capsize

(April 1) -- At first, people suspected it might have been an April Fools joke, but the following story is not, despite all hopes to the contrary, an April Fools' Day prank. During a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the proposed relocation of naval personnel to the island of Guam, Rep. Hank Johnson expressed his concern for the stability of the tiny U.S. territory -- not its political stability or its economic stability, but its basic, physical stability. "My fear that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," the Georgia Democrat said, ...

Obama Wins Guam by 7 Votes

Can you say "razor thin"? Barack Obama received 2,264 votes in Saturday's primary election in Guam. Hillary Clinton got 2,257. That means an even split of Guam's 4 pledged delegates. Two of Guam's superdelegates went to Obama. Two go to Clinton. One has still not declared. Yes, oddly enough, Guam has more superdelegates than the pledged variety.Guam. Maybe this moment in the spotlight will mean a bump in U.S. tourism. Summer in Guam. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?In other news, earlier tonight, Hillary said of Barack:"If Senator Obama is the nominee, you better believe I'll work my heart ...

Obama's Counter: Superdelegates

Obama's Counter: Superdelegates

Barack Obama's morning-after, might not be as gloomy as some would think . According to Marc Ambinder, he's set to unveil a slew of newly-minted superdelegate endorsements today (and no, John Mellencamp doesn't count). One of those, Oklahoma's Governor, Brad Henry, had previously said he'd wait until the convention to decide. Make no mistake about it, Hillary Clinton notched a solid win in Pennsylvania. She won the popular vote of that state by roughly 200,000, and now trails Obama in that category by only half a million or so (excluding some caucus states, Michigan and Florida). So why are ...
