Is Arsenic the Real Gulf Oil Spill Health Threat?

Is Arsenic the Real Gulf Oil Spill Health Threat?

The gulf oil spill has already elicited concerns over the havoc being wreaked by massive quantities of spilled oil and the chemical dispersants used to clean them up. Now, experts are sounding an alarm over a third potential troublemaker in the Gulf of Mexico: growing levels of arsenic that could threaten the region's food chain. Arsenic is naturally found in seawater, but is removed in a natural filtration process that buries it under the ocean floor. But the compound is also in oil. And as millions of barrels spew into the gulf, arsenic levels are rising faster than the ecosystem can keep ...

Frustration Mounts as Oil Seeps Into Gulf Wetlands

ROBERT, La. (May 23) -- Anger grew along the Gulf Coast as an ooze of oil washed into delicate coastal wetlands in Louisiana, with many wondering how to clean up the monthlong mess - especially now that BP's latest try to plug the blown-out well won't happen until at least Tuesday. "It's difficult to clean up when you haven't stopped the source," said Chris Roberts, a councilman for Jefferson Parish, which stretches from the New Orleans metropolitan area to the coast. "You can scrape it off the beach but it's coming right back." Roberts surveyed the oil that forced officials to close a ...

Gulf Oil Spill: Cancellations and Worry Along the Coast

NEW ORLEANS -- Bearing out many peoples' worst fears during a month of heightening anxiety, thick oil is now coming ashore on stretches of Louisiana's gulf coast, especially the barrier islands. In some cases, the toxic sludge has also entered the inner salt marshes that nurture so much of the Bayou State's marine life, and thus its seafood industry. Patches of oil can be found from the Louisiana's eastward Chandeleur Islands, due south of Biloxi, Miss., to Marsh Island, due south of Lafayette, La. (Both sites are National Wildlife Refuges.) Measured in a relatively straight line along ...

Lenny Kravitz, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint Headline 'Gulf Aid' to Fishermen

NEW ORLEANS -- Sunday's Gulf Aid concert here demonstrated the city's staunch support for commercial fishermen from the region whose livelihoods are threatened by the disastrous BP oil spill. Although few in attendance at the 12-hour fundraiser for the fishing industry appeared to be fishermen themselves, the word "we" was frequently used in discussing the catastrophe's potential effects, the vast anxiety caused by its still-unresolved status, and a determined sense of optimism in the face of adversity. "We are ready to tackle this," Allen Toussaint, the pianist, songwriter, producer and ...

Sen. Bill Nelson Wants Stop to New Offshore Drilling As Oil Spill Worsens

As a massive oil slick made its way toward the Gulf Coast Thursday, Florida's senior senator called on President Obama to put a emergency moratorium on all new offshore oil drilling. Sen. Bill Nelson, a Democrat, also introduced a bill to stop the Obama administration from moving forward with a plan to expand offshore oil drilling to the area of the Outer Continental Shelf. In a letter to the president, Nelson specifically asked for an immediate halt to operations on test wells and exploratory activities in all coastal waters until the cause of the Deep Water test well spill is known. That ...

Bitter Cold Threatens Crops in the South

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 6) -- Florida farmers worked to salvage millions of dollars worth of crops and sun-seeking tourists were met with chilly temperatures expected to last through the weekend as an unusual Southern cold snap gripped the Gulf states on Wednesday. A hard freeze warning was issued along the Gulf Coast, including most of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Forecasters say the dangerously cold air mass could force temperatures into the teens in parts of the region by Thursday. Subfreezing temperatures along with heavy snow also hit parts of New England and created ...

David Delucci Donated $100,000 To Katrina Relief Efforts

Cleveland Indians left-fielder David Delucci is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana so when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast back in 2005 he took it very personally. Through a foundation he started called Catch-22 For Blue, Delucci was able to raise over $100,000 to donate for hurricane relief. When Katrina first hit, Delucci cut the Red Cross a check and it was doubled by the Texas Rangers, his team at the time. He also signed some baseballs to sell at a home game for $22 each, and they sold out before the first pitch. "All game I'm thinking, 'I've got to do something,'" Dellucci recalled. ...
