Economics of Abortion: Recession and Contraception Among Key Factors

For the first time since 1981, the long-term decline in U.S. abortions has stalled. And experts are pinning the blame on the recession. In other words, when it comes to abortions, American consumers behave much as they do when buying cars: when they have less money, they are more likely to opt for a used car, rather than splurging on the latest model. I'll explain that further shortly. The new data comes from the Guttmacher Institute in New York, which periodically surveys U.S. abortion providers. Researchers found that in 2008, there were 19.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44. While this ...

Melinda Gates on 350,000 Childbirth Deaths: 'We Can Prevent Most'

Teen Pregnancy, Abortion Rise for First Time in Years

(Jan. 26) -- New figures show a reversal in the years-long trend of declining teen pregnancy in the United States. Pregnancy and abortion rates for 15-to-19-year-olds increased for the first time in more than a decade in 2006, the most recent year for which statistics are available. The numbers compiled by the Guttmacher Institute are "deeply troubling," according to Heather Boonstra, a senior public policy associate for the reproductive health research group. She linked the increase to the Bush administration's emphasis on abstinence-only sex education programs, which her organization ...

Unsafe Abortions Still Take Their Toll

Abortion is a very tricky issue. It's tricky morally, it's tricky legally and it's tricky politically. But here's one thing that isn't tricky: 70,000 women are dying every year from unsafe abortions. And the vast majority of them are poor. A recent study by the Guttmacher Institute in New York shows that while the total number of abortions in recent years has fallen across the globe, that drop relates mainly to legal abortions and is due largely to changes in Eastern European laws. According to the report, 41.6 million pregnancies were terminated worldwide in 2003, compared with 45.5 million ...
