Robert Gibbs' Successor: How About a Woman as White House Press Secretary?

Robert Gibbs' Successor: How About a Woman as White House Press Secretary?

The White House is looking for a successor to departing press secretary Robert Gibbs, and the top prospects -- as usual -- are men. But Politico's Mike Allen says new chief of staff Bill Daley would like a woman in the job. A woman as the face of this administration -- why, that would be something new and different. The most important qualities in a press secretary include access to the president, clarity of expression, ease on camera, and good relations with reporters. The names in the mix so far are deputy press secretaries Bill Burton (who'd be the first black press secretary) and Josh ...

Conservative Bloggers Defend Accuracy of Palin's 'Party Like It's 1773' Statement

(Oct. 20) -- Let's get one thing straight right away: The Boston Tea Party took place on Dec. 16, 1773. Opposing pundits across the blogosphere have been bickering over comments made by Sarah Palin at a rally on Monday in Reno, Nev. Palin told a crowd of tea party supporters that they shouldn't "party like it's 1773" because there is still much work to be done between now and the November elections. The 1773 party that Palin was referring to is, of course, the Boston Tea Party. Here is the video of Palin speaking: Palin's history is clearly accurate in this case. Unfortunately, the Boston ...

VP Debate: Those Pesky Facts

Ah, the morning after. You had a reckless blast last night, doing or saying whatever felt good in that moment. Now, it's time to wake up and face facts. You're not really a movie-producing fireman-cop, and she isn't really on the pill. FactCheck.org is the political equivalent of that buzzkill friend who cluelessly salts your game whenever you bring him or her out with you. They have already analyzed last night's Vice Presidential Debate, and although both candidates practiced elasticity of veracity, the winner of the FactCheck Derby was clearly Joe Biden. Just on volume, Biden had fewer ...

Debate Moderator Failed

Debate Moderator Failed

Though most polls are showing that Joe Biden "won" his debate with Sarah Palin last night, I couldn't help but feel a bit cheated by the whole thing. Why? Because the candidates were allowed to ramble on and on with their talking points. In effect, there was very little in the night that differed from the stump speeches each candidate delivers on a daily basis. Biden got to ramble on about the middle class, Scranton, how John McCain is like George Bush -- while Palin repeatedly kept gushing her "maverick" mantra. The responsibility for steering these candidates toward substantive matters, and ...

VP Debate Made Easier for Palin

VP Debate Made Easier for Palin

This pretty much speaks for itself:At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates. McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the ...
