Harold Ford 'Stonewalled' Into Withdrawing?

On the New York Times op-ed page and on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Tuesday, Harold Ford Jr., did what many New Yorkers feared he would do if elected to Kirsten Gillibrand's U.S. Senate seat: he made the weaker appear the stronger cause. He prevaricated. He dissembled. He put the best face on an embarrassing situation -- an important skill for a politician, but this particular politician was seeking to explain not why he was running, but why he was not running a race he nevertheless insists he could have won. It's pretty well known by now that Ford, erstwhile U.S. representative from Tennessee, ...

New York Senate Race Tempting Bloomberg Pal?

New York Senate Race Tempting Bloomberg Pal?

The movers and shakers, Senate wannabes and chattering classes remain instensely interested in the New York Senate seat vacated last year by Hillary Clinton and currently occupied by Democrat Kirsten E. Gillibrand. That much was evident this weekend with word from the New York Times that real estate magnate and New York Daily News publisher Morton B. Zuckerman is eyeing the office. The Times story, citing two unamed sources, noted that talks were only preliminary, but said Zuckerman's background as a successful outsider would appeal to the state's electorate in a tumultuous political and ...

Another Poll Shows Gillibrand with a Big Lead Over Ford in New York

Mirroring other recent polls, a Daily Kos/Research 2000 survey conducted Jan. 18-20 finds that Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has a significant lead over former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford should he try to challenge her for the party's nomination for a full term in the Senate seat that had been held by Hillary Clinton. Gillibrand leads Ford 41 percent to 27 percent, with 3 percent for Jonathan Tasini, head of an economic consulting firm. Twenty-nine percent are undecided. Ford has not announced a candidacy but has been traveling around the state as if he already were one. Follow Poll Watch ...

Challenges Grow for Gillibrand's Re-Election Prospects in N.Y.

Challenges Grow for Gillibrand's Re-Election Prospects in N.Y.

A possible primary challenge from former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford appears to be the least of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's problems. A plurality of voters would rather see someone else than her elected as senator and, for the first time, more of them regard her unfavorably than favorably, according to a Siena Research Institute poll conducted Jan. 10-14. ...

Gillibrand Has Early Lead Over Ford for N.Y. Senate, If He Runs

The talk that former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford might challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand for the Democratic Party's nomination has caused a big stir in New York politics. Harold Ford Says He Won't Let Party Leaders Deter Him from N.Y. Senate Bid

Former five-term Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford, who now lives in New York and is a regular on the political talk show circuit, says he won't be "bullied or intimidated" by Democratic party leaders who are trying to discourage him from challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed last year to fill out the term of Hillary Clinton, according to the New York Times. The Times quoted a spokesman for Ford as saying that New York needed a senator with the "independence to stand up and do what is right for our state, regardless of what the party bosses in Albany and Washington want." While ...

Former Tenn. Congressman Harold Ford Considering Challenge to Sen. Kristen Gillibrand in N.Y.

Harold Ford Jr., the former congressman from Tennessee, is considering a challenge to New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand in this year's Democratic primary, according to sources close to him. Ford moved to New York three years ago after losing a bitter Senate fight in Tennessee. He has told friends he will decide in the next month or so whether to mount a campaign, the New York Times reported. Some Democrats accuse Gillibrand of flip-flopping on issues like gun control and immigration and say she's unprepared to run in New York's more conservative upstate districts. Gillibrand was ...

How Far Can the GOP Push It?

How Far Can the GOP Push It?

From Politico: The Republican National Committee has commissioned polling and focus groups to determine the boundaries of attacking a minority or female candidate, according to people involved. The secretive effort underscores the enormous risk senior GOP operatives see for a party often criticized for its insensitivity to minorities in campaigns dating back to the 1960's. Yes, the gang that brought you Willie Horton is back. And if you think that if Barack Obama wins the nomination that the GOP won't have the guts to play a few race cards, I have a name for you to remember: Harold Ford. ...
