Justice Ends Bush-Era U.S. Attorney Scandal With a Whimper, Not a Prosecution

The Justice Department's two-year investigation of Bush administration officials involved in the U.S. attorney scandal of 2006-2007 ended curiously last week amid the shouting over Shirleygate, and only the stoutest of major media outlets much noticed or marked the ignoble occasion. Surely, you remember the U.S. attorney scandal. It occurred when officials at George W. Bush's White House and Alberto Gonzales' Justice Department fired (unusually, in midterm) eight successful, Republican-appointed U.S. attorneys. The circumstances gave rise to suspicions, and later circumstantial evidence, that ...

Elena Kagan's Fashion Sense: Robin Givhan and the Nominee's Legs

Now it's come to this: the way Elena Kagan sits. In a lengthy examination of the Supreme Court nominee's seating posture – "hunched with her legs ajar" – the Washington Post fashion writer gives us a tour of Kagan's hip-length jackets, underpinnings, hosiery, shoes and jewelry, the way she "walks with authority and stands up straight," and the way she defies convention with that business with the legs. "In photographs of Kagan sitting and chatting in various Capitol Hill offices, she doesn't appear to ever cross her legs,'' the writer says. "Her posture stands out because for so ...

Judge Rules WH Aides Must Testify

A federal district court judge ruled today in the case of White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers, saying that the two must appear in response to Congressional subpoenas. Judge John Bates rejected the Bush Administration's claim of Executive privilege for current and former advisers to the president. "The executive's current claim of absolute immunity from compelled Congressional process for senior presidential aides is without any support in the case law," he wrote.Democrats on the House Judiciary committee issued subpoenas to Bolten and Miers ...

House Files Suit in Contempt Case

The House Judiciary Committee filed a lawsuit in Federal court today, seeking to compel two Bush Administration officials to testify about their roles in the firing of eight United States Attorneys last year. The House voted contempt of Congress charges against White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers last month, after the two refused to answer subpoenas sent them by the Judiciary Committee. The action is a first of its kind. No branch of Congress has ever sued the Executive Branch to enforce a subpoena. The Justice Department denied a request by House ...

Republicans Walk Out Before Contempt Vote

Angered House Minority Leader John Boehner led a walk out of House Republicans today after protesting a vote on contempt of Congress charges against former White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers. Boehner wanted to address the renewal of the Protect America Act. "We have space on the calendar today for a politically charged fishing expedition, but no space for a bill that would protect the American people from terrorists who want to kill us," said Boehner before telling his colleagues, "Let's just get up and leave." Miers, Bolten Contempt Vote Delayed

In July, the House Judiciary Committee approved contempt citations against White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers. Bolten and Miers failed to testify about the U.S. attorney scandal despite being subpoenaed when the Bush administration invoked executive privilege. Today, however, Politico reports that Democrats are now planning to postpone the floor vote indefinitely. Senior Democrats believe that pressing the issue now ...
