Hawaii

Democrats hope to turn Blue Hawaii a deeper shade of blue by taking the governor's office and gaining a House seat. Republican Gov. Linda Lingle can't run again because of term limits. Polls indicate Democrat Neil Abercrombie, a longtime congressman, has an edge over the Republican nominee, Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona. There's a rare opportunity for a Democratic House pickup in the 1st District, where Republican Charles Djou won a three-way special election in May to fill the seat Abercrombie gave up to run for governor. Djou's Democratic opponent is state Sen. Colleen Hanabusa. In the Senate race, Democrat Daniel Inouye is cruising into his ninth six-year term. Obama won his native state of Hawaii in 2008.
