Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Dec. 13) -- Does mandatory health insurance go against the U.S. Constitution? Virginia U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson ruled today that the coverage mandates in President Barack Obama's signature health care legislation "exceed the constitutional boundaries of congressional power," a potential setback for the new law. Though the matter is far from settled, and does not necessarily mean that "Obamacare," as many conservative critics call it, will not go forward, pundits from across the political spectrum offered a flurry of reactions to Hudson's ruling (which can be read in full ...
The White House announced Tuesday evening that President Obama would be using a recess appointment to place Donald Berwick, the administration's nominee to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), in office. The position has been vacant since 2006, but the choice of Berwick has caused an uproar from Republicans, who by some accounts are using the confirmation process to reignite the health care debate. Below, Surge Desk answers some of your questions about the contentious appointment. 1. Who is Donald Berwick? Berwick, 63, is the president and CEO of the Institute for ...
Speaking at the University of Iowa soon after he signed the Patient Protection and Care Act into law, President Barack Obama told an amused audience that he hadn't seen any asteroids falling from the heavens. It was his way of saying that the sky won't collapse because the United States has finally joined the long list of industrialized democracies providing near-universal health care coverage. Considering the political obstacles he overcame to obtain a health care bill, it is understandable that the president is using a time-worn tactic of ridiculing the more extreme claims of the opposition ...
(April 16) -- Just before the House passed the health care reform bill in March, President Barack Obama's lead pollster, Joel Benenson, promised that the reform's low public approval numbers would climb "once reform passes" and Americans start to see "the tangible benefits" they will get. Many other reform backers made the same point. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said that once it passes "it's going to become more popular" because "the lies that have been spread, they vanish because you see what's in the bill." Others argued that the public's sour view of the legislation was mainly a result ...
President Obama is in the early stages of setting a political trap for the GOP -- one he hopes will take one of his greatest weaknesses and turn it into a strength. The weakness Obama has is that he is viewed as fiscally reckless by much of the electorate, having engineered an unprecedented spending binge even before he passed into law a hugely expensive new entitlement program in health care. At a time when the deficit and debt are more potent political issues than ever, and when those who are viewed as responsible for them are more vulnerable than ever, Obama and Democrats in Congress are ...
WASHINGTON (April 7) -- The FBI arrested a San Francisco man this afternoon for allegedly making dozens of threatening phone calls to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over health care reform, the latest in the backlash against lawmakers who supported the legislation. Gregory Giusti, 48, was arrested around 12:15 p.m. and was scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in San Francisco at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Patti Hansen, a spokeswoman for the FBI in San Francisco, told AOL News. Hansen said the charges were under seal, and, therefore, she could not comment on them. "We take threats against elected ...
Indiana will join a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the health care reform bill Congress passed in March, The Hill reports. The state's Republican attorney general, Greg Zoeller, said Sunday on Fox News that Indiana would become the 15th state involved in the legal action. Zoeller emphasized that the constitutional challenge had little to do with the content of the law. "It's really part of our job description to bring these challenges," he said. "It's not something that says whether we are for or against the measure; it's really to check to see whether the federal government ...
TYSONS CORNER, Va. (April 4) -- Rep. Gerry Connolly was among friends as he explained at a Rotary Club breakfast why he voted for health care reform last month. "We're all businessmen and businesswomen," the Democratic congressman told the well-dressed group over bacon and eggs at a private club here. "This bill is the largest single deficit-reduction legislation in American history. It's a good start in terms of sort of fiscal discipline, and it will bring down the cost of health care." Many in the room nodded approvingly. Other parts of the district are not so welcoming. Many are ...
Since the beginning of the health care reform debate, I've been swamped with questions from readers about the finer points of the bills moving through Congress. Now that health reform is the law, I'm pulling out the most asked questions to answer them for everybody. I'll start with a few easy ones today, and will get into the more detailed questions as the week goes on. So here we go... Pete wants to know, "Who will run health care in the U.S.?" Good question, Pete. Contrary to some rumors, the reform law is not a full-blown "government takeover of health care." The huge majority of Americans ...
Sixty-one percent of Americans believe the federal deficit will get worse, 55 percent predict the overall cost of health care will worsen, and 50 percent believe that will be true, too, for their own families' costs as a result of the health care overhaul, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted March 26-28. The negatives clearly outweighed the positives when Gallup asked whether 10 things would get better, worse or remain the same because of the legislation. None of the 10 measures reached the 50 percent mark in terms of things that Americans thought would improve. The top two areas ...
