UFO or Hoax? Dispute Over Alleged Sighting in Brazil [VIDEO]

Is this actual footage of a UFO hovering above the Brazilian state of Sao Paolo? Or is it the work of hoaxers? These are the questions Brazilians are asking after the news network G1 aired amateur video purportedly showing a bizarre object floating in the sky over the town of Agudos -- then disappearing in a burst of light. According to The Telegraph, the station says the footage comes from two motorists who spotted the alleged UFO and pulled over to film it, until the object vanished in a colorful flash that shook the ground. (There have been no recent earthquakes in that area, according to ...

Pranksters Blamed for Turning Canadian River Fluorescent Green

Pranksters Blamed for Turning Canadian River Fluorescent Green

The Goldstream River didn't live up to its name last month when the Canadian waterway started flowing bright green. The river, which runs through the city of Langford, British Columbia, turned a fluorescent green on Dec. 30, when a passer-by captured stunning video of the verdant waterway. At first it wasn't clear what caused the river -- and the water in a nearby fountain -- to change color. But investigators now believe that the green hue was caused by the addition of fluorescein, a synthetic organic compound that is often used as a dye, or a "fluorescent tracer," in the testing of water ...

'Facebook Shutting Down' and 3 Other Rumors About the Site

Let's just be clear: Facebook is not shutting down. A ridiculous rumor began circulating over the weekend that the Internet's premier social network will be closing up shop on March 15, 2011. And while, hypothetically speaking, pulling the plug on Facebook would be a fascinating experiment in drastically altering how people communicate, the company denies it has any plans to stop operating. According to one theory, the rumor is the result of a satirical article published by tabloid site the Weekly World News. Mashable reached out to Facebook Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu, who ...

I Blame Myself for 'Balloon Boy' Hoaxer's Rise

(Oct. 14) -- Today marks the one-year anniversary of Richard Heene's attempt to hoax the world by making it look as if his son, Falcon, had sneaked aboard a helium balloon that then broke free of its tether and floated over Fort Collins, Colo., in hopes of landing a reality series. For most people, that was the first time they had heard of this wannabe reality show star, but the roots of his 15 minutes of fame started in 2001. I should know. I was responsible for it. Rich Abrahamson, Pool / Getty Images Richard Heene gestures during a 2010 interview. Heene now says there was no balloon hoax ...

'Balloon Boy' Anniversary: Lesson Learned?

'Balloon Boy' Anniversary: Lesson Learned?

(Oct. 14) -- Rewind to one year ago: We watched, transfixed, as a giant silver balloon hurtled across the sky, chased by aircraft and vehicles on the ground. Inside was an undoubtedly terrified 6-year-old boy. The nation held its breath. And then exhaled in a giant sigh of disgust as it slowly became clear the whole episode was a giant hoax, perpetrated by the boy's parents, who'd launched an unmanned -- or un-boyed in this case -- Mylar bag toward Denver International Airport and then called authorities. And the media. With the first anniversary Friday of that cringe-inducing ...

Tree Resembling Female Sex Organ an Internet Hoax?

(Aug. 30) -- Faking an orgasm is one thing, but faking a vagina tree is something else altogether. In recent days, a photo of a 100-year-old tamarind tree with branches that look amazingly like the open legs of a naked woman became an Internet sensation after appearing on the Tabloid Prodigy website, quickly getting picked up by The Frisky and Jezebel, among other sites. A vagina-shaped tree in Thailand reportedly helped people win a local lottery. But could this be a hoax? The first English-language paper to publish this uncredited photo is the Phuket Gazette. The tree, which is ...

Mars Big as Moon Tonight? Top 5 Astronomy Hoaxes

(Aug. 27) -- In case you were wondering, Mars, which is normally roughly the size of any star in the night sky, will not appear to be as big as the moon tonight, as alleged in a recent e-mail making the rounds. The chain letter belongs to a long line of astronomical hoaxes, five of which are listed below, including one that dates back almost 1,000 years. First, some more details on this Mars one: 1. Mars "Second Moon" The latest e-mail, which has been debunked, seems to be based partially on the true fact that, on Aug. 27, 2003, Mars was closer to Earth than at any point in the previous ...

E-Mail Hoax Reports Deaths of Sens. Leahy, Feinstein, Lautenberg

They're alive and well. Phony e-mails reported this week that Democratic Sens. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Dianne Feinstein of California and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey had died of liver cancer. Word of the hoax broke Tuesday as Sen. Robert Byrd, who died last week, was buried in a private ceremony. Leahy's office said the e-mails were designed to appear as though they were sent by Senate staffers, the Burlington Free Press reported. Capitol Police are investigating the grim gag; the e-mails went to a number of radio and television stations as well as newspapers. The 86-year-old ...

Balloon Boy Mom's Interviews Contradict Husband

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Jan. 23) - A newly released video shows the mother of the 6-year-old boy purported to be in a runaway balloon finally acknowledging to authorities it was all a hoax - contrary to her husband's repeated public denials just before reporting to jail. The video interviews obtained by the Fort Collins Coloradoan Friday show Mayumi Heene telling sheriff's officials that the Oct. 15 event was a hoax that she and her husband orchestrated to gain notoriety and land a reality TV show. "We tried working so hard to make money to survive. It's a shame to come up with this idea," ...

One More on Ashley Todd

OK so a lot of people, including myself and even the McCain campaign itself, were punked by Ashley Todd. Not good. And yes we've had a lot of posts on this subject, but let me add one more and trust me, there is a payoff at the end:From the Post-Gazette: Once she had told the story to police, "she told lie after lie and the situation compounded to where we are right now," said Lt. Kraus. He added that Ms. Todd showed no remorse for her actions but was angry with the media, saying they blew the story out of proportion. ... Ms. Todd's job as a field representative for the College Republican ...
