Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! In the final stretch of this volatile and polarizing midterm election, while the beleaguered Democrats duck to ward off an approaching Republican steamroller, rippling cracks are widening in two of the most reliable and loyal Democratic voting blocs, women and Latinos. The past several weeks have exposed troubling frustration, anger and apathy among white Democratic female voters and among Latino Democrats. More alarming for Democrats than the "enthusiasm gap" between Democrats and Republicans is emerging evidence that women and Latinos are drifting away from their longtime political home and ...
Either Nancy Pelosi really does think her Democrats are going to do much, much better than expected at the polls in a little over a month -- or the House Speaker should have gone to Yale Drama and given La Streep some real competition. Ever since White House press secretary Robert Gibbs first suggested back in July that Democrats could lose the House, Pelosi has often seemed alone in her grasp of the fact that defeatism isn't energizing. Democrats have cash, and lots of it, bolstering candidates' hopes that the party can inject enough last-minute money to build a firewall against the GOP's red-hot base voters in November. "Reports of the House ...
Conservatives are far more enthusiastic about voting in these year's congressional elections than either moderates or liberals and the gap gets larger when those who say they are "very conservative" is measured, according to a Gallup poll of registered voters conducted May 1-16. Forty-five percent of conservatives say they are very enthusiastic about voting compared to 22 percent of moderates and 26 percent of liberals. Sixty-two percent who say they are very conservative (10 percent of the sample) are also very enthusiastic compared to 44 percent who say they are very liberal (4 percent of ...
