Can Seven Reports Be Wrong About the Risks of Spending Cuts? GOP Says Yes

Could two independent economic reports, a liberal think tank and four bipartisan reports on debt reduction be wrong? They all conclude that slashing federal spending this year could cause job losses and threaten the economic recovery. The latest report, from Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics, says 700,000 jobs could be lost by the end of 2012 if Republicans succeed in their quest to cut $60 billion from domestic programs this year. Cuts and tax increases are necessary to address the nation's long-term fiscal problems, Zandi said, but "cutting too deeply before the economy is in full expansion...

Opinion Roundup: Will 'So Be It' Comment Hurt Boehner?

At a news conference on Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner answered a question about federal job loss in the event that House Republicans enact billions of dollars in discretionary spending cuts. "Over the last two years since President Obama has taken office, the federal government has added 200,000 new federal jobs," Boehner said. "And if some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it. We're broke. It's time for us to get serious about how we're spending the nation's money." From the Atlantic Wire Boehner's words -- "so be it" -- have been splashed across any number of websites...

Why Did 26 Republicans Vote Against Extending the Patriot Act?

WASHINGTON -- House Republican leaders expecting an easy two-thirds vote to extend key provisions of the Patriot Act were handed a rude surprise when 26 of their own opted to side with Nancy Pelosi and the American Civil Liberties Union instead of them. For Speaker of the House John Boehner, who once suggested to his new tea party compatriots that they would need to act like "adults" on tough votes such as raising the debt ceiling, what should have been a routine roll call turned into possibly the first concrete evidence that his caucus may be more unruly than he imagined. The majority party...

GOP Divided Over Obama Response to Egypt

WASHINGTON -- As chaos roils Egypt, Republican lawmakers and the GOP's potential presidential candidates are divided over President Barack Obama's response though united in concern that an Islamic regime could rise to power in a nation that is an important U.S. ally in the precarious Middle East. Compared with recent verbal sparring on domestic issues, the debate between Democrats and Republicans on Egypt is somewhat muted. That's perhaps because the two parties differ little over U.S. policy toward Egypt. Both view the country as a linchpin to a peaceful Middle East. And while supportive of...

Boehner Calls Arizona Shooting an 'Inhuman Act'

WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- House Speaker John Boehner says that the shooting of an Arizona congresswoman won't stop representatives in Washington from their duties. In a brief statement Sunday morning, the newly sworn speaker said flags on the House side of the Capitol in Washington will be flown at half staff to honor Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' slain aide, Gabe Zimmerman. Thirty-year-old Zimmerman was among six killed Saturday in a Tucson, Ariz., shooting rampage that left the Democratic congresswoman among 13 wounded. Boehner says normal House business this week is postponed to focus on...
