Predictions From Caleb

Obama Reaches Voters Verily, while in repose there came upon mine eyes a darkness. And in its grip my mind was given to see upon the day of choosing, and lo I was able to tell what that day would bring upon us. It came to pass in the year two thousand and eight, there dwelt upon the land of America a great strife. The peoples of the earth mingled freely in this land, but were sore afraid. They wandered in fear of a recurrence of the great soup times of many years gone. They believed the oceans themselves awaited their fate on the day of choosing, when the tide would know whether to rise or ...

Predictions From Greg

What would prediction folly be without foolish predictions! So here's my 2.5 cents of clairvoyance: 1. People vote. Pretty sure that'll happen. In fact I can boldly predict tomorrow, Tuesday, November 4th people will vote. I'll go further. Some will make the right choice, others a wrong one. But all together, they're be more voices than we seen in a very long time. Nationally, between 65-68% of the voting age population will participate. 2. Someone wins. There will be a winner Election Night. 3. Margins won't matter. Closer than many expect, contests in battleground states will surprise ...

Predictions From Tommy

This is kind of uncomfortable for me to share, but I'm kind of into the whole "91/2 weeks" food thing. An assortment of paddles is always nice...(moves hand to nonexistent earpiece) sorry, it's not predilections?...Oh, predictions, got it. Awk-ward. The 2008 election has been a long, strange trip indeed, and I would expect its terminus to be no less strange. Here, then, are some of my predictions for Election Day: 2008. 1. Barack Obama will win in an electoral landslide. Huge turnout in every state, combined with the crush of new voters, will flip tossup states to Obama. Final score - Obama: ...

Predictions from David

Today we've decided to follow Denise's lead and will be running a prediction post from each Political Machine writer. The person who comes closest to guessing the number of electoral votes (538 up for grabs) each presidential candidate receives, as well as the allocation of congressional seats by party, wins a hearty pat on the back (actual prize may or may not include a hearty pat on the back).OK. Let the blindfolded game of darts begin. President: Barack Obama will win big. In terms of electoral votes, I see him getting 353. And that leaves McCain with 185.Congress: Democrats won't reach the ...

Playing Politics with Economic Fire

Playing Politics with Economic Fire

What we've witnessed over the course of the last week is something of a perfect storm. With the financial sector teetering on the brink, and election year politics in full swing, reason, foresight, and an orderly distribution of life preservers, have been sacrificed for tantrums of the here and now. Who is to blame for the economic mess we are only starting to glimpse? Everyone. You, me, Wall Street, the Bush Administration, Congress, television pundits, the whole lot of us. A pox on all of our houses! Americans have long been living on credit. Not just the poor, who often didn't qualify in ...

Obama Cribs Bailout Idea From House GOP

Obama Cribs Bailout Idea From House GOP

Sen. Barack Obama today proposed a specific idea to help solve the financial bailout impasse gripping Washington. Obama came out behind a plan to more than double the limit on deposits insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) from the current $100,000 to $250,000. The idea is to bolster confidence in bank customers that their savings are safe and to prevent future bank runs like the one that hit Washington Mutual last week just before it collapsed. It is an idea that has potential to win some more votes for the beleaguered bailout package that failed its first test in the ...

House Passes Limited Drilling Bill

By  Mark Impomeni - Politics Daily
House Passes Limited Drilling Bill

Democrats in the House passed an energy bill today that will provide limited drilling expansion off small areas of the U.S. coast. The bill will open up drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf off the coasts of four states: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico off Florida. But drilling would be confined to an area no closer than 50 miles to the coast and no further than 100 miles. The bill also continues prohibitions on increased exploration in Alaska's North Slope, and the interior Mountain West. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) praised the ...

Downticket Dems Getting Scared

Downticket Dems Getting Scared

FT.com"If people are voting for McCain it could help Republicans all the way down the ticket, even in a year when the Democrats should be sweeping all before us," said the fundraiser, a former Hillary Clinton supporter."There is a growing sense of doom among Democrats I have spoken to . . . People are going crazy, telling the campaign 'you've got to do something'."Concern was greatest among first-term representatives who won seats in traditionally Republican districts in the landslide of 2006. "Several of them face a real fight to hold on to those seats," the ...
