Report: Iran's Paramilitary Launches Cyber Attack

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iranian hackers working for the powerful Revolutionary Guard's paramilitary Basij group have launched attacks on websites of the "enemies," a state-owned newspaper reported Monday in a rare acknowledgment from Iran that it's involved in cyber warfare. The report followed an announcement in January that Iran had formed its first cyber police unit in an attempt by authorities to gain an edge in the digital world. The Internet has also been a key outlet for Iran's opposition since the 2009 disputed presidential election. In addition, Iran has been trying to boost its web ...

Opinion: New START's Shaky Start

In the last-minute rush to secure Senate approval of the New START arms control treaty with Russia, the White House argued that Senate passage of the accord would secure Russian assistance in curtailing Iran's nuclear weapons development program. But despite the administration's claim that the treaty would "create a stronger U.S.-Russia bond in a broader international effort to restrain Iran's nuclear weapons program," so far Iran isn't showing any signs of restraint. On Jan. 22 -- exactly one month after the Senate approved the treaty -- diplomatic efforts to restart talks on Iran's nuclear ...

Obama Taps New Point Man for Terror Finances, Iran Sanctions

Stuart Levey, architect of the post-9/11 strategy of using the long reach of the U.S. financial system to fight terrorists and pressure Iran to give up its atomic ambitions, is leaving the government just as the sanctions fight with Iran could be heating up. President Barack Obama today named Levey's current deputy and former law partner, David Cohen, the assistant Treasury secretary for terrorist financing, to succeed Levey as undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence. Levey was the first to hold the post when it was created by the Bush administration in 2004. And in 2009, ...

Iran Vows No Compromise Ahead of Nuclear Talks

Iran Vows No Compromise Ahead of Nuclear Talks

Iran has vowed not to compromise on its nuclear program ahead of multilateral talks scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Istanbul. Instead, the regime says it wants the talks to focus on global political problems, claiming this could be the "last chance" for some type of agreement to be reached with the West. Earlier this week, Iran's official news agency IRNA quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying, "Today, we are making progress in the nuclear field and they can say and do whatever they want. They can even issue 100,000 resolutions. Like we care." The United States, Britain, China, ...

Is Iran Using Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan to Deflect the West?

Analysis Yet another chapter in the Great Game may be afoot across the Middle East, as Iran seeks to sidetrack the United States and allied powers from their mission to block Tehran from gaining nuclear weapons. And players, or pawns, in the game this time may include Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Palestinian territories -- all historically, and often bloody, areas of Iranian influence, and all places where Iran could have had a hand in recent disruptive events. Next week, Iranian negotiators are set to resume nuclear talks in Turkey with the so-called P5+1 group, the five permanent ...

Iran Says It Has Cracked an Israeli Spy Ring

JERUSALEM -- Iran says it has broken up an Israeli spy ring and captured an agent who helped assassinate an Iranian nuclear scientist last year, raising tensions between the two countries even further. Iran's foreign minister today said Tehran will bring Israel to justice for "crimes against humanity and our scientists." The alleged Mossad agent was paraded on Iranian TV's English broadcast Monday night and shown on Israel TV's Channel 2. The suspect's name was not given, but he appeared to be in his early 30s. He said he traveled to Israel, where he met with his Israeli handlers. He ...

Iran Confirms Invitations for Nuclear Tour

TEHRAN, Iran -- The Tehran government confirmed on Tuesday that it has invited world powers and its allies in the Arab and developing world to tour Iranian nuclear sites before a high-profile meeting late January on its disputed nuclear program. An Iranian official speaking on condition of anonymity from a European capital said facilities to be visited include the nuclear enrichment facility at Natanz and the Arak site where Tehran is building a plutonium-producing heavy water reactor. Both facilities are considered suspect by the West because they could be used to make the fissile core of ...

Opinion: START Won't Stop Nuclear Proliferation

(Dec. 10) -- Immediately following last month's election, President Barack Obama renewed his call on the Senate to ratify the New START treaty with Russia in order to "send a signal to the world that we're serious about nonproliferation." The claim that progress in U.S.-Russian arms control will help stop countries like Iran from getting nuclear weapons isn't just an argument offered in support of New START. It's also one of the key premises underlying President Obama's embrace of global nuclear disarmament. There's just one problem: The notion that faster disarmament will lead to greater ...

Iran, 6 Powers Talks Recess With No Signs of Progress

Iran, 6 Powers Talks Recess With No Signs of Progress

GENEVA (Dec. 6) -- Talks between Iran and six world powers recessed Monday with no sign that Tehran was ready to discuss U.N. Security Council calls to curb its nuclear activities that could be harnessed to make weapons, an official at the negotiations said. While the two sides were scheduled to meet in a second session on Tuesday, the description of Monday's meeting by the official gave little reason to presume that Iran would relent and agree to talks specifically addressing the U.N Security Council demands. That, in turn, would dash hopes of a renewed meeting in the new year. The U.S. and ...

Is a Beleaguered Iran Ripe for Nuclear Negotiation?

(Dec.1) -- Iran enters next week's negotiations with the United States and other world powers boasting a long record of outfoxing opponents of its nuclear ambitions. But this time Tehran comes to the table under nearly unprecedented international and domestic pressure to relinquish enrichment of uranium and other activities the West and the United Nations suspect are aimed at producing nuclear weapons. That leads some participants to hope for some kind of breakthrough. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said today that she's "encouraged" by Iran's agreement to meet with diplomats from ...
