Report: Pakistani Spies Aided Mumbai Attacks

(Oct. 19) -- Pakistan's leading spy agency was deeply involved in the planning of the November 2008 terrorist attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai, according to a leaked Indian government document that details the interrogation of a U.S. citizen convicted in connection with the bloodbath. The information was gleaned from Pakistani-American David Headley during 34 hours of questioning by Indian investigators in June. Headley is facing life in prison in the U.S. after pleading guilty this year to surveying targets ahead of the attack. Verna Sadock, AP In this Dec. 9, 2009, courtroom drawing, ...

Opinion: Pakistan Slowly Awakens to WikiLeaks Implications

KARACHI, Pakistan (July 27) -- As soon as I heard about the WikiLeaks news story on Monday morning, I went online to see what people were saying about it. It's a massive story, with huge implications for Pakistan. The more than 90,000 documents leaked online not only expose the grave number of unreported civilian deaths in Afghanistan but also point a very blunt finger at the Pakistani intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, and accuse it of aiding the Taliban in the insurgency against American and NATO troops. On Twitter, I witnessed a debate going on among three ...

Afghan WikiLeaks: Is There Much New?

(July 26) -- U.S. officials are condemning the leak of more than 91,000 military intelligence records on the Afghan war, saying the publication could threaten the safety of American and allied troops. But while the Pentagon may be outraged, many experts are questioning whether the trove of documents actually reveals anything new or truly damaging about the nine-year-old conflict. The collection of confidential papers was released by the WikiLeaks website -- which earlier this year put out a 2007 video of an Apache helicopter firing on a group of unarmed Iraqis -- and includes previously ...

Massive Leak of Documents Shows Faltering Afghan War, Duplicity by Pakistan

The whistleblower website WikiLeaks has given three news organizations a trove of over 90,000 records of events and intelligence reports covering six years that provide a grim assessment of the U.S. war in Afghanistan, portray a Taliban insurgency that has gained in strength, and suggests that Pakistan's spy service has met with the Taliban in secret strategy sessions to organize resistance to the American effort. One of the news organizations, the British Guardian newspaper, called the disclosures one of the biggest leaks in U.S. military history. The New York Times and the German weekly Der ...

How Real Is Pakistan's New Tack on Taliban?

How Real Is Pakistan's New Tack on Taliban?

(Feb. 25) -- Revelations this week that Pakistan has arrested up to half of the resident Afghan Taliban leadership, known as the Quetta Shura, has raised hopes that a reluctant neighbor is finally coming around to supporting the U.S.- led war in Afghanistan. The arrests over the last few weeks -- including the detention of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban's second in command -- are being hailed as a new beginning for Pakistan, which has traditionally nurtured Islamic fundamentalists as an integral part of its foreign policy. Mohammad Sajjad, AP Pakistani security officials walk past ...

Pop Quiz: Are You an American Idiot?

Pop Quiz: Are You an American Idiot?

Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, whom you may recall urged Sarah Palin to step down as John McCain's VP nominee after a series of disastrous television interviews, seems to think our whole country needs to resign. Based on the results of a study by the ISI (yes, the people who built the Six Million Dollar Man), she writes:America's report card may come as little surprise to fans of Jay Leno's man-on-the-street interviews, which reveal that most people don't know diddly about doohickey. Still, it's disheartening in the wake of a populist-driven election celebrating joes-of-all-trades to ...
