Machine Arrives to Aid Rescuers at Idaho Mine

MULLAN, Idaho - Mining company officials brought in a remote-controlled digging machine Sunday to help try to reach a worker missing since a tunnel collapsed deep inside an Idaho mine. The special digger must be disassembled before being taken more than a mile below the surface, where it will be put back together, according to Hecla Mining Company officials. Officials said the machine should be underground by Sunday evening, but it was unclear how soon the process of reassembling the device would be finished or when rescuers would be able to put it to work. The roof of a tunnel at ...

Judge Blocks Deal on Protections for Wolves

BOISE, Idaho - A federal judge has denied a proposed settlement agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and 10 conservation groups that would have lifted endangered species protections for wolves in Montana and Idaho. U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy in Missoula on Saturday rejected the agreement that could have led to public hunting of some 1,300 wolves in the two states. In the 24-page decision, Molloy cited the court's lack of authority to put part of an endangered species population under state management and expose that population to hunting, noting "Congress has clearly ...

Fake Cop? Man Accused of Using Cell Phone App to Pull Over Driver

The app was on his cell -- and now the suspect is in his cell. Police in Idaho arrested 20-year-old driver Alexander A. Welch on charges of impersonating a police officer after the suspect allegedly pulled over another motorist on Saturday using a cell phone app with flashing red and blue lights. Law enforcement officials in Boise received a call from a worried driver who was concerned after being pulled over by a car with flashing lights that didn't look -- or behave -- like a police vehicle, according to the Idaho Statesman. When cops pulled over Welch, police say they found a cell phone ...

Auburn Tree Poisoning and 5 Other Pranks Born of College Rivalries

College rivalries are the stuff of legend, but some Southern football fans may have taken things too far with a recent prank. A University of Alabama fan stands accused of poisoning -- yes, poisoning -- 130-year-old trees at Toomer's Corner, a famous intersection where the Auburn University campus meets the town. A man was arrested in connection with the stunt, which first came to the public's attention after someone called into a sports radio show and claimed that he had poisoned the trees because of a long-standing Auburn-Alabama grudge. Soon after, officials confirmed that the trees had ...

Feds: Fugitive Mobster Found Living in Rural Idaho

MARSING, Idaho -- To his neighbors, he was Jay Shaw, the guy with the vaguely New York accent. He was known for fixing computers, buying everything with cash, raising cows and knowing how to handle a gun. To the FBI, he was a New England mobster who vanished in 1994 after a botched attempt to whack his boss. On Wednesday, the 42-year-old dark-haired man, dressed in a yellow jumpsuit and his hands cuffed behind his back, strolled into a courtroom in Boise, sat down at a table and spoke calmly to a judge. "My name is Enrico M. Ponzo," he said. After the judge read a long list of charges ...
