Obama: US Backs Orderly Transition in Egypt

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama called for an "orderly and genuine" transition to democracy in Egypt on Thursday, but Hosni Mubarak stopped short of meeting protesters' demands that he step down at once. He did say he was transferring some powers to his vice president. The Egyptian president, in a televised address from his palace in Cairo, promised a peaceful transfer of power but did not spell out exactly what was next. He said the demands of protesters calling for his immediate ouster were just, and he said he had requested six constitutional amendments in line with their urging. He ...

'Gangster,' 'Dictator,' 'Emperor': Hu Jintao Gets Bad Reviews From Some Lawmakers

President Obama hosted a lavish White House state dinner for Hu Jintao Wednesday, but that didn't stop several lawmakers from publicly calling the Chinese president a repressive leader and human rights abuser. Specifically, Hu is a "gangster," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) said on CNN's "Parker-Spitzer." "Our trouble is we've been treating these people like Englishmen or Belgians . . . when in reality this is a gangster regime that murders its own people, and should be treated that way or they won't respect us." Rohrabacher's comments came on the heels of those by Senate Majority Leader ...

Obama Lifts Some Cuba Travel Restrictions

NEW YORK – The Obama administration has ended some restrictions on Americans' travel to Cuba, but let the nearly 50-year-old embargo stand. The White House said Friday that the changes would allow travel to Cuba by academic, religious and cultural groups. But restrictions remain in place on tourist travel to the island. The president also expanded the number of airports that can serve the Cuban market. Most travel to Cuba from the United States originates in Miami and New York. The administration had been expected to make the changes months ago but did not want to announce them before ...

Obama to Ease Cuba Travel Restrictions

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- President Barack Obama plans to loosen Cuban travel policy to allow students and church groups to go to the communist country, the administration announced Friday. Students seeking academic credit and churches traveling for religious purposes will be able to go to Cuba. The plan will also let any American send as much as $500 every three months to Cuban citizens who are not part of the Castro administration and are not members of the Communist Party. Also, more airports will be allowed to offer charter service. Right now, only three airports - in Miami, Los Angeles and ...

Netanyahu Apologizes to Florida Lawmaker for Fidel Castro Comments

(Nov. 24) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an unusual apology two weeks ago to Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the incoming chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, for admiring remarks he made about Fidel Castro, Haaretz reports today. How did this odd situation come about? It all began earlier this year, when Castro sat down with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg, who reported: "Castro repeatedly returned to his excoriation of anti-Semitism. He criticized [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust and explained why the Iranian government ...

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, 'Buck' McKeon to Wield Clout on Foreign Affairs, Defense

The new Republican majority in the House of Representatives could have considerable affect on that body's approach to national security and foreign policy issues. Rep. John Boehner, who will become the next speaker, has promised that committee chairmen will be key to party strategy on the front lines. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Howard P. "Buck" McKeon -- Republicans who are expected to become the new chairs of committees that deal with substantive military and foreign policy issues -- are likely to focus on the 2011 withdrawal deadline in Afghanistan, the defense budget and a new detention ...

Is the GOP in the Closet About Backing Gay Rights?

WASHINGTON (Oct. 13) -- A federal judge's order to halt enforcement of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy was hailed by gay activists as a landmark ruling in their struggle to expand their rights. But something else made the case significant: The group that filed the lawsuit was the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay advocacy organization. And the policy U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips ruled unconstitutional? It was the brainchild of the Democratic president, Bill Clinton, who nominated her. Seventeen years after Clinton hashed out a compromise with conservatives that has led to ...

GOP Congresswoman Hangs Up on Barack Obama, Then on Rahm Emanuel

Rep.Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fl) set back the cause of bi-partisanship when she hung up on President-Elect Barack Obama, then hung up again on his Chief of Staff Designate, Rahm Emanuel. This had to come as a shock to Rahm, who usually does the hanging up. From Politico: According to Ros-Lehtinen's flack Alex Cruz, the congresswoman received the call on her cell phone from a Chicago-based number and an aide informed her that Obama wanted to speak to her. When Obama introduced himself, Ros-Lehtinen cut him off and said, "I'm sorry but I think this is a joke from one of the South Florida radio ...
