Illinois Elections

Illinois

President Obama's old Senate seat is the trophy in this election. Democrat Roland Burris, appointed by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich to complete Obama's term, is not running. State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias hopes to keep the seat Democratic, but is in a tight race against GOP Rep. Mark Kirk. Giannoulias has been dogged by questions about his work as a top loan officer for his family's failed bank, which was seized by federal regulators in April. Kirk has had to apologize for exaggerating his military record.Democrat Pat Quinn took over as governor last year when Blagojevich was ousted over allegations of corruption, including a charge of trying to sell Obama's Senate seat. Quinn is running for a full term against Republican Bill Brady.Kirk's decision to run for Senate left open the House seat in the 10th District, where Democrat Dan Seals is facing Republican Robert Dold. Congressional races in the 11th and 14th districts are also rated as tossups. Obama won his home state of Illinois in 2008.
