The average price for gas in New York could top $4 by early next week. Hawaii, Alaska, California, Illinois and Connecticut already have pump prices above that mark, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge. Hawaii has the highest price in the U.S. at $4.47 per gallon. 5 Large States, 5 Different Paths to Fix Broken Budgets

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- California's governor wants to maintain temporary tax increases to keep $9 billion a year flowing to the state treasury. Low-tax Texas is considering tapping its rainy day account to soften the effects of deep spending cuts. New York's governor pushed through budget cuts while keeping a campaign pledge to avoid tax increases. And residents of Illinois and Florida are getting a very different take on taxes: Illinois passed a massive increase, while Florida proposes giving its taxpayers a big break. The five states are the nation's most populous but are taking very ...

Chicago School Bans Bag Lunches to Get Kids to Eat Less Junk Food

A push for healthier school lunches has led one Chicago school to ban students from bringing lunches from home altogether. Students at Chicago's Little Village Academy are required to eat the lunch provided to them by the school -- a policy that has cooked up controversy among parents and educators amid a national debate about the best way to promote healthy eating for children. "Some of the kids don't like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast," Erica Martinez, a parent at the school, told the Chicago Tribune, which first reported the story. "So it would be a good idea if ...

Amid Ethics Debate, Conjoined Twins Celebrate First Birthday

Twin brothers Kameron and Kaydon Hayes celebrated their first birthday this week. They both love the character Elmo on "Sesame Street." They smile. Sometimes Kaydon babbles, trying to talk. Holding hands, they kick happily when they play and often poke each other in the face. Born at 37 weeks weighing a combined total of 10 pounds, the boys -- who weren't expected to live -- share more than a special bond; they share a liver and a malformed heart. Their birth and subsequent medical care touched off debate among doctors and medical ethics experts who said the conjoined twins are destined to ...

Mother and Father Deliver Baby in U-Haul

Proud father Draper Lewis has a new slogan for U-Haul: Baby on Board. Draper; his toddler, Alyssa; and his very pregnant wife, Angel, were driving the family's belongings from their old home in Minnesota to their new home in Illinois earlier this week. Their 5-year-old son Draper Jr. waited with his grandmother up the road in Chicago where, the Lewises presumed, a new sibling would be born on or around Angel's due date, March 17. The third-time mom had been having mild contractions for a few weeks, Draper told AOL News, but her other children had been induced, and she thought she was fine to ...

Illinois Governor Abolishes Capital Punishment, Empties Death Row

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois abolished the death penalty Wednesday, more than a decade after the state imposed a moratorium on executions out of concern that innocent people could be put to death by a justice system that had wrongly condemned 13 men. Gov. Pat Quinn also commuted the sentences of all 15 inmates remaining on death row. They will now serve life in prison with no hope of parole. State lawmakers voted in January to abandon capital punishment, and Quinn spent two months reflecting on the issue, speaking with prosecutors, crime victims' families, death penalty opponents and ...

Blagojevich Asks Judge to Cancel Retrial, Sentence Him for Lying

In an unexpected move, the highly entertaining and often unpredictable former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has asked a federal judge to cancel his retrial and sentence him on the sole conviction in his first trial: lying to an FBI agent. Blagojevich insisted that he is still innocent but said he was making the request in the interest of justice and saving taxpayers money, according to a motion filed today in U.S. District Court in Chicago. He was convicted in the first trial on one of 24 counts, and the government is slated to retry him April 20. Richard Drew, AP Former Illinois ...
