Feds Find LAX Airport Can Be a Zoo -- Literally

On any given day, the sprawling Los Angeles International Airport known as LAX can be a zoo, locked in a frenetic pace, passengers coming and going. And then on certain days, it really, really is a zoo. Over the past few years alone, federal law enforcement authorities have nabbed people trying to illegally smuggle in everything from lizards to songbirds. They've used money belts and snack boxes. One woman faked a pregnancy to smuggle a pet monkey from Thailand. U.S. Attorney's Office / AP These turtles were confiscated Friday at Los Angeles International Airport. ...

Report: Pentagon Didn't Fully Investigate Child Porn Allegations

The Pentagon is facing criticism after admitting that it failed to thoroughly investigate allegations that employees were viewing child pornography. "These cases were not considered a priority by the Defense Department in the first place, and they should have been,'' Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, told The Boston Globe this week. In 2006, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency came up with a list of more than 5,000 Pentagon employees suspected of viewing child pornography. The Pentagon was asked to review the list, but only checked about two-thirds of the names. Pentagon ...

Immigration Cops Deporting Fewer, Focus More on Criminals, Security Threats

Immigration officers are starting to cancel deportations of thousands of immigrants and shifting their focus to those who have been convicted of crimes or pose national security threats, a newspaper report said Friday. The change in direction, part of an effort to cut into big backlogs in immigration courts, was disclosed recently in a memo from John Morton, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the New York Times said. Advocates for immigrants hailed the policy shift as a common sense move, but some Republicans cited it as evidence that President Obama is going soft on ...

(Aug. 13) -- President Barack Obama is set to sign a $600 million border security bill today. The legislation was approved by the Senate Thursday and by the House on Tuesday in special August sessions. Federal Judge Blocks Key Parts of Arizona's Immigration Law

A federal judge in Phoenix Wednesday ordered Arizona officials to delay indefinitely much of the enforcement of the state's controversial new immigration law, declaring major portions of the measure an impermissible burden on federal resources and priorities. Only portions of the law now will go into effect as planned midnight Thursday. Put on hold for now, pending further judicial review, were provisions that required a check of immigration status for anyone stopped by the police under "reasonable suspicion" of unlawful status; made it a state crime to violate federal immigrant registration ...

Deportation of Illegal Immigrants Increases Under Obama

Record numbers of illegal immigrants have been deported since President Obama took office, and the number of audits of businesses that hire undocumented workers has quadrupled during the same period, The Washington Post reported. The administration's plan to overhaul federal immigration laws has led to the deportation of about 400,000 people this fiscal year. That's ten percent more deportations than the Bush administration's 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007, according to the Post. Last month Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton wrote a memo ...

Hundreds of Federal Agents Fall Victim to Ponzi Scheme

(July 8) -- FBI agents are supposed to unearth scams, not become victims of them. This time is different. Some 300 retired and current federal agents -- representing the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- collectively invested tens of millions of dollars of retirement money in what turned out to be a Ponzi scheme allegedly run by a Florida man who committed suicide last month, an attorney in the case said. The FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission are now investigating and trying to recover funds. "There are definitely [agents] who ...
