Moderates Are Not Independents, and Other Clues to Moves by Obama, GOP

If you want to understand why President Barack Obama and opposition Republicans are acting the way they are, a new study provides some clues. Bottom line: Democrats need huge numbers of moderates to win national elections, while Republicans can rely a lot more on their conservative base. Moderates are "the true presidential kingmakers," political scientists William Galston and Elaine Kamarck write in their study for the centrist Democratic think tank, Third Way. Since 1980, the pair say, no Democrat has been elected president without winning at least 60 percent of the moderate vote, ...

Obama Poll Ratings Show Some Gains in Key States, but He's Not Out of the Woods

Obama Poll Ratings Show Some Gains in Key States, but He's Not Out of the Woods

During last year's elections, when polls were showing things headed south for many Democrats in key battleground states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, they also included warning signs for President Obama and his reelection chances in 2012. In a new set of polls, Obama's numbers in those two swing states, which were looking troublesome last summer, have improved, just as his standings in national polls have risen recently. However, that rebound does not return him to the point where it could be said he has regained the kind of strength he had in 2008. Surveys this month and last by Quinnipiac ...

Poll Shows Strong Public Support for Tax Cut Deal

(Dec. 13) -- Conservatives, liberals and political independents are markedly in sync when it comes to the deal President Barack Obama forged with Republicans on extension of the Bush-era tax cuts and unemployment benefits. A poll released today by the Pew Research Center indicates a strong bipartisan majority backs the deal, including 62 percent of Republicans, 63 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of independents. Within the parties, 64 percent of conservatives and 65 percent of liberals favor the deal. At a time when the two parties' elected officials in Washington have been bitterly ...

Independents Also Fed Up With Entire Political System

(Nov. 2) -- Much has been written about the anger and disillusionment of voters this year. Pollsters are predicting a "throw the bums out" wave that could sweep hundreds of new candidates into office on Tuesday. The Tea Party has manifested much of this anger on the right but what is particularly striking and has been much less reported is the level of anger this year in the independent/swing voters, who represent a much bigger block of votes. ...

Independent Voters Fed Up With Entire Political System

Much has been written about the anger and disillusionment of voters this year. An estimated 37 percent of all American voters now call themselves independents or unaffiliated voters, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center. ...

Energized Voters Put GOP Out in Front, Poll Says

Another major poll Sunday showed Republicans holding a big enough lead to enable them to recapture the House in Tuesday's elections, thanks to more enthusiasm among its supporters and a sharp swing to the GOP by independents. ...

For Americans, One Recession, Two Impacts

For Americans, One Recession, Two Impacts

New research finds the recent recession, which some economists believe ended last year, affected Americans in two distinct ways -- with one group barely feeling the pinch and the other walloped with job losses, missed mortgage payments and shrunken household budgets. The Pew analysis out Friday concludes that the hard times divided America into two groups "that are roughly the same size but that experienced very different economic downturns." On the one hand are those who "lost ground," the 55 percent of Americans who said they were hit hard by the recession. Fully 44 percent reported they ...

Charlie Crist Makes it Official: He's Running for Senate as an Independent

As expected, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announced Thursday that he has left the Republican Party and will run as an independent in the race for the Sunshine State's Senate seat. Crist, whose fortunes among Republicans have faded in recent months, told supporters in his home town of St. Petersburg that his decision to bolt the GOP is "the right thing for Florida." "My decision to run for the U.S. Senate as a candidate without party affiliation says more about our nation and our state than it says about me," Crist said during a short speech alongside his family. "Unfortunately our political ...
