Greek Riot Police Clash With Protesters as Strike Turns Violent

ATHENS, Greece -- In the latest sign of swelling social unrest, Greek riot police clashed with angry demonstrators in Athens today, marring a nationwide protest against continued austerity measures. The clashes sprang from a massive demonstration that drew an estimated 40,000 workers to the streets in the first major labor protest this year. Riot police fired tear gas at young protesters, who hurled stones, petrol bombs and firecrackers at government buildings. Thick smoke blanketed much of the city for hours, sending demonstrators and bystanders scrambling for cover. AFP / Getty ...

EU Agrees on $89 Billion Bailout Loan for Ireland

BRUSSELS (Nov. 28) -- European Union nations agreed to give euro67.5 billion ($89.4 billion) in bailout loans to Ireland on Sunday to help it weather the cost of its massive banking crisis, and sketched out new rules for future emergencies in an effort to restore faith in the euro currency. The rescue deal, approved by finance ministers at an emergency meeting in Brussels, means two of the eurozone's 16 nations have now come to depend on foreign help and underscores Europe's struggle to contain its spreading debt crisis. The fear is that with Greece and now Ireland shored up, speculative ...

Irish Prime Minister's Own Party Plans to Replace Him

DUBLIN (Nov. 23) -- Lawmakers in Prime Minister Brian Cowen's own party mounted a rebellion Tuesday to try to oust him, an effort that could trigger a snap election and delay a massive EU-IMF bailout of Ireland. Cowen's Cabinet colleagues in the Fianna Fail party said they were confident, however, that the rebels don't have enough votes to pursue a no-confidence motion against Cowen. The Cabinet gathered at Cowen's office to complete its four-year plan for unprecedented budget cuts tied to Ireland's international bailout. The plan, which proposes to slash euro15 billion ($20 billion) from ...

Ireland Swallows Bitter Pill, Asks EU for Emergency Loan

DUBLIN (Nov. 21) -- Debt-crippled Ireland formally applied Sunday for a massive EU-IMF loan to stem the flight of capital from its banks, joining Greece in a step unthinkable only a few years ago when Ireland was a booming Celtic Tiger and the economic envy of Europe. European Union finance ministers quickly agreed in principle to the bailout, saying it "is warranted to safeguard financial stability in the EU and euro area." But all sides said further weeks of negotiations loomed to define the fund's terms, conditions and precise size. Ireland's crisis, set off by its foundering banks, drove ...

How the Celtic Tiger Lost Its Stripes

How the Celtic Tiger Lost Its Stripes

LONDON (Nov. 18) -- The governor of the Central Bank of Ireland announced today that his debt-addled country would almost certainly accept a loan worth tens of billions of dollars from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund in the coming days. But why does the country -- until 2008 known as the Celtic Tiger for its roaring economy -- need to borrow so much cash? Here's a guide to the Emerald Isle's financial woes. How did the country end up in such a mess? Ireland's economy took off in the 1990s thanks to its ultra-low corporate tax rate, which lured major multinationals like ...

Ireland Resisting Pressure to Accept Huge EU Bailout

LONDON (Nov. 15) -- The European Union is drawing up a possible $110 billion bailout plan to help Ireland rescue its ailing banking sector, despite repeated claims by the Irish government that the debt-ridden nation doesn't need any outside help. Reports of a bailout first emerged this weekend, when it was revealed that Irish finance ministry officials were holding informal talks with senior EU representatives over a rescue package of $80 billion to $110 billion. A government spokesman acknowledged today that a meeting had taken place with "international colleagues" over the country's debt ...

Obama Claims Strengthened Hand in Global Dealings

YOKOHAMA, Japan (Nov. 12) -- President Barack Obama claimed a stronger hand on the world stage Friday despite electoral defeats at home, failure to get a free-trade agreement with South Korea and lackluster international support for his get-tough policy with China on trade and currency disputes. "It wasn't any easier to talk about currency when I was first elected and my poll numbers were at 65 percent," Obama argued at the close of the G-20 summit, after bluntly accusing Beijing of undervaluing its currency. The president flew to Japan for the APEC summit without the coveted trade pact with ...

Greek PM Threatens to Call Early National Vote

ATHENS, Greece (Oct. 26) -- After five months of draconian austerity measures, Greece's ruling socialists look set to take a brutal beating in local elections next week. Will the national government survive, though? For months, the question seemed irrelevant. But as social discourse swells in a debt-choked country increasingly wary of belt-tightening reforms, and as the government's popularity plummets to record lows, Prime Minister George Papandreou has now lashed back, threatening voters to take them on an early trip to the ballot box if his party suffers a heavy defeat in the Nov. 7 local ...

Greek Truckers Usher In European Union Protests

Greek Truckers Usher In European Union Protests

ATHENS, Greece (Sept. 22) -- Greek truckers weren't celebrating Europe's no-car day today when they clashed with police, parked hundreds of truck on two main motorways and sealed off traffic around Athens. The protest marked the latest show of defiance against a government shake-up of labor rules liberalizing so-called closed-shop professions. The reforms are part of conditions set out by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund for a $144 billion bailout package provided to debt-ridden Greece earlier this year. Protesting for a 10th day and waving Greek flags, truck drivers ...
