US Hikers Held in Iran Get Court Date for May

The two American men jailed in Iran for the past 19 months and accused of being U.S. spies are set to appear in a Tehran court next month. The May 11 court session, announced today in Iranian media, will be the third court appearance for Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, both 28. Twice before, Iran has delayed a verdict in their case because a third defendant, fellow American Sara Shourd, who is engaged to be married to Bauer, wasn't present. Shourd, 32, was released on bail in September for medical reasons and has been summoned to return to Iran to face trial. It's unlikely she'll risk re-arrest ...

12 Iranian Engineers Kidnapped in Afghanistan

TEHRAN, Iran -- Armed assailants kidnapped 12 Iranian engineers building a road in western Afghanistan, said Iranian and Afghan officials Monday. Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the Iranian engineers were working for a construction company in the western Farah Province and the incident was under investigation by Iranian and Afghan authorities. Militants in the area claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and threatened to kill the hostages if work on the road is not halted, said Gen. Sayed Mohammad, the police chief for Farah province. "For the time being the road ...

US Secretly Backs Syrian Opposition, Leaked Cables Reveal

WASHINGTON - The State Department has been secretly financing opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad, The Washington Post reported, citing previously undisclosed diplomatic documents provided to the newspaper by the WikiLeaks website. One of the outfits funded by the U.S. is Barada TV, a London-based satellite channel that broadcasts anti-government news into Syria, the Post reported Sunday. Barada's chief editor, Malik al-Abdeh, is a cofounder of the Syrian exile group Movement for Justice and Development. The leaked documents show that the U.S. has provided at least $6 million to ...

Is Iran Helping Syria Crack Down on Protesters?

Is Iran Helping Syria Crack Down on Protesters?

In its bloody crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters, Syria may be getting some secret help from an old friend -- Iran. Iran has long been suspected of aiding its fellow Shiite Muslims in Bahrain and Yemen during anti-government rallies in those countries. Bahrain has a Shiite majority ruled by a Sunni Muslim king, and Shiites have long complained of discrimination. Yemen and Saudi Arabia also have significant Shiite minorities in certain regions. Iran is suspected of secretly supporting those populations as they rise up against Sunni leaders. Now U.S. officials have said privately that they ...

Iranian Students Hurl Firebombs at Saudi Embassy

TEHRAN, Iran -- Scores of Iranian students have attacked the Saudi Arabian embassy with firebombs to protest the Gulf country's role in cracking down on anti-government protesters in Bahrain. The official IRNA news agency says protesters tried to attach a flag of the Lebanese group Hezbollah to the embassy's gate Monday, but were prevented by police. Protesters chanted slogans against Saudi and Bahraini leaders, both followers of Sunni Islam. Iran, predominantly Shiite Muslim, has denounced the deployment of a Saudi-led force to help prop up Bahrain's monarchy. A government crackdown against ...

Twitter Celebrates 5 Years and 200 Million Users

"just setting up my twttr" Jack Dorsey typed this simple phrase, 24 characters long, on March 21, 2006, kicking off an experiment called "twttr." Users were allotted a meager 140 characters, spaces included, to "tweet" about anything they wanted. Techies like Dorsey and co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams embraced Twitter's simple concept. Even the most loquacious users became Hemingway-esque masters of the spare, relying on an abundance of wit rather than an excess of words to convey what they were doing, thinking, eating, wearing ... whatever. Bahrain King Claims to Have Foiled 'Foreign Plot'

MANAMA, Bahrain - Bahrain's king said Monday that a foreign plot to "subvert security and stability" in the Gulf island kingdom has been foiled, and praised the Saudi-led force he invited to help quell the unprecedented unrest in this majority Shiite nation. Any reference to a foreign conspiracy against Bahrain's Sunni dynasty can be interpreted as jab at the region's Shiite powerhouse Iran. Gulf Sunni kings and sheiks are concerned Iran will gain more influence in the oil-rich region by helping Bahrain's Shiites in their revolt for greater political freedoms. Bahrain is trying to crush a ...

Video: Obama Denounces Repression in Iran

Today, I want to extend my best wishes to all who are celebrating Nowruz in the United States and around the world. Each year of my presidency, I have marked this holiday by speaking directly to the people of Iran. That is what I would like to do once more. This is a holiday for the Iranian people to spend time with friends and family; to reflect on the extraordinary blessings that you enjoy; and to look forward to the promise of a new day. After all, this is a season of hope and renewal. And today, we know that this is also a season of promise across the Middle East and North Africa, even ...
