Mass Protests in Yemen Over Leader's Women Remark

SANAA, Yemen - Security forces fired on anti-government protesters in Yemen's capital Sunday as hundreds of thousands of marchers - including many women - packed cities around the country to denounce the president and remarks he made against women taking part in rallies demanding his ouster. The massive turnout suggests opposition forces have been able to tap into fresh outrage against Ali Abdullah Saleh after his comments Friday that mingling of men and women at protests violated Islamic law. Hani Mohammed, AP Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, pictured here last month, has ...

Okla. Judge Grants Permanent Injunction on 'Shariah Law Amendment'

(Nov. 29) -- Shariah law, OK? An Oklahoma federal judge has put a hold on Ballot Question 755 -- aka the "Shariah law amendment" -- which forbids state courts from implementing international laws, including Islamic Shariah law. The permanent injunction will grant the judge additional time to consider issues surrounding the amendment. Oklahoma federal Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange previously blocked implementation of the ballot measure, which was approved by voters in early November, in light of a lawsuit filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations aiming to nullify the law. That motion ...

The Second Monday in November: News From the Legal Beat

Now that the great American political machine has paused at last to take a breath, now that the commentators and lobbyists are back home soaking their shibboleths in salt water, perhaps it's time for an old-fashioned survey of the legal beat. It's the second Monday in November, after all, the first Monday after elections, and that means jurists all over the country are trying to clear their decks before the holidays. In the least surprising news of the day, a Connecticut jury came back with a recommendation of the death penalty against a brutal murderer whose deadly home invasion tortured ...

Judge Blocks Oklahoma's Shariah Law Ban, for Now

Judge Blocks Oklahoma's Shariah Law Ban, for Now

(Nov. 8) -- Will Shariah law in Oklahoma resume on Tuesday? A federal judge temporarily blocked the implementation of state ballot measure 755, a controversial new law that officially bans state courts from considering Shariah law when rendering decisions. Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange ruled that the voter initiative that singles out Islamic law should not be certified into law until another hearing takes place on Nov. 22. Calling the measure a violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Council on American-Islamic Relations filed a lawsuit last ...

Muslim Group to Sue Okla. Over Shariah Law Amendment

(Nov. 3) -- Which is greater, man's law or God's law? The answer to that question depends in part on whom you ask and on which religion is being considered. On Tuesday, for instance, voters in Oklahoma passed State Question 755, aka the "Shariah law amendment," which changed the state constitution so that Oklahoma courts are now forbidden from "considering or using" both international law and Shariah law when making their decisions. Here's some of the text of the measure: International law is also known as the law of nations. It deals with the conduct of international organizations and ...

Texas Board of Ed Votes to Correct 'Pro-Islam' Textbooks

(Sept. 24) -- The Texas State Board of Education approved a resolution today that requires publishers to correct a "pro-Islamic/anti-Christian bias" in future world history textbooks. The resolution, which narrowly passed 7-6, cites instances of an alleged emphasis on unfavorable events in Christian history as told in school textbooks, while claiming that the same textbooks gloss over similar events in Islamic history. "What we're trying to do is prohibit and send a clear message to the publishers that [the bias] should not happen in the future," board member Terri Leo said. The Lone Star ...

Saudi Arabia Urged Not to Paralyze Man as Punishment

(Aug. 21) -- Saudi Arabia was urged by a human rights group not to deliberately paralyze a man as punishment for injuries he inflicted during a fight. Saudi media reports indicate that authorities have contacted several hospitals to ask if they would be able to sever the man's spinal cord. One of the hospitals has indicated it is able to perform the operation. The authorities are seeking the punishment at the request of the man's victim in the fight. The victim, Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, is able to make a request under sharia law, since he himself was left paralyzed by the fight. Such cases ...

Islamic Law in Oklahoma? Vote to Bar Sharia May Be on Fall Ballot

Islamic Law in Oklahoma? Vote to Bar Sharia May Be on Fall Ballot

Oklahoma sure doesn't seem like the kind of place where the Islamic law code known as Sharia might take over. With just 30,000 Muslims out a population of nearly 3.7 million, and a whole wheat, corn-fed reputation that inspired the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma is about as far from Saudi Arabia -- one Muslim country that follows a strict version of Sharia -- as you can get. But legislators in the Sooner State figure you can never be too careful. Hence their push to put a question on November's ballot that would ask voters to make state courts rely on federal and state laws when ...

Tight Pants Ban Begins in Indonesia with Confiscations of Womens' Jeans

So long hip-huggers. On Thursday, a ban on tight pants for women went into effect on Thursday. Twenty thousand long skirts have been passed out to Muslim women who are found to be in violation of the ban in this portion of Indonesia that lives under Sharia law. Police confiscated the jeans of 18 women they spotted riding motorcycles and scooters on Thursday, the Associated Press reported. "I am not wearing sexy outfits, but they caught me like a terrorist only because of my jeans," a 40-year-old housewife named Imma told the AP. According to the Epoch Times, women caught violating the ...
