Israeli Officials Celebrate After Goldstone Rethinks War Crimes Report

JERUSALEM -- Israeli officials feel vindicated after Judge Richard Goldstone retracted part of his harsh criticism of Israel's conduct in Gaza two years ago, and have launched a major diplomatic effort to get the United Nations to rescind the Goldstone Report. "I found it hard to believe that Judge Goldstone, a Jew and even a Zionist, could have really believed that Israel would deliberately target Palestinian civilians," Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya'alon told a group of journalists, including AOL News, by phone. "He must have been influenced by Arab propaganda." Ashraf Amra, ...

Study: Young Israelis Leaning More Conservative

JERUSALEM -- A survey released today finds young Israelis are moving to the right politically, as peace talks with the Palestinians remain stalled and the Middle East erupts around them. The study finds that 60 percent of Jewish teenagers between the ages of 15 and 18 prefer "strong" leaders to the rule of law. It also finds that in cases where state security and democratic values conflict, 70 percent of teenagers believe security should come first. Ariel Schalit, AP Israeli settlers and their supporters wave Israeli flags March 13 in Tel Aviv as they protest the killing of five ...

Mom Has Cancer. Her Son Reacts.

Mom Has Cancer. Her Son Reacts.

My friend Julie Levine had everything I lacked: A charmed childhood, beautiful kids. I might have envied her had she not been the nicest person I ever met. And, therefore, a magnet for cancer. (On an Internet bulletin board I once frequented, we joked that compassion and a zest for living were risk factors.) Julie is eight years younger than me, so I assumed she would someday speak at my funeral. Especially once I received a diagnosis of stage III ovarian cancer in 2001. Julie came to my hospital room. She took me to chemo. She and her mother came to my house bearing brisket, fudgy peanut ...

Charlie Sheen, Julian Assange and John Galliano: Who's Really Anti-Semitic?

When did anti-Semitism become fashionable again? In the past week, we've seen three prominent individuals from different fields make remarks that either could be interpreted as or definitely were anti-Semitic. Julian Assange The WikiLeaks mastermind ranted about how "Jewish" reporters are out to get him, the British magazine Private Eye reported. After Private Eye published an article about the anti-Semitism of someone else associated with WikiLeaks, Assange called the magazine's editor. He then complained that reporters from the U.K. newspaper the Guardian were conspiring against him and ...

Barbra Streisand's Cousin Blocked From Moving to Israel

Barbra Streisand's Cousin Blocked From Moving to Israel

JERUSALEM -- Israel has decided against allowing the cousin of Barbra Streisand to immigrate to the country even though as a Jew he is automatically entitled to citizenship here under the Law of Return. Dale Streisand, 57, lived in the U.S. until a year ago, when he moved to the Philippines after getting married. Last August he submitted a request to the Israeli government to "make aliyah," meaning, literally, "to ascend." He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that he had been thinking of moving to Israel for many years but decided to take the plunge now because his wife is pregnant and he ...

Giffords Proud to Be Arizona's First Jewish Congresswoman

Giffords Proud to Be Arizona's First Jewish Congresswoman

WASHINGTON -- Her family name doesn't "sound Jewish," but Gabrielle Giffords was proud of the identity her grandfather tried to hide years ago when he changed it from Hornstein to avoid the wrath of anti-Semites. It remains unknown what motivated suspect Jared Loughner's alleged assassination attempt that left six dead and Gifford "holding her own" in a critical care unit at a Tucson, Ariz., hospital. But even if anti-Semitism is found to have played a role, those who know the lawmaker say she would never have denied such an integral part of her identity. Matt York, ...

Hanukkah 2010 Celebrations Begin Across the Web!

(Dec. 1) -- The Festival of Lights is once again upon us. Jews around the world will celebrate the first night of Hanukkah tonight. The holiday commemorates the underdog Maccabees' victory in 165 B.C. over their powerful Syrian oppressors who, according to tradition, had taken over the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and defiled it. Why does Hanukkah last eight days? Tradition teaches that when the Maccabees returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, a one-day supply of oil illuminated the temple for eight days. Hence, the "Festival of Lights." This year, Hanukkah begins relatively early because ...

Beck Slammed for 'Horrific' Holocaust Remarks

(Nov. 12) -- Jewish leaders have condemned Glenn Beck for comments he made on Fox News accusing billionaire philanthropist George Soros -- a Jew -- of being complicit with the Holocaust as a child in Nazi-occupied Hungary. On three TV programs this past week, the conservative commentator has focused on Soros, a Hungarian-born financier and democracy advocate, calling him a "puppet master" who is "notorious for collapsing economies and regimes all around the world." Soros' pro-democracy Open Society Institute played a role in the collapse of communist regimes in Hungary and Georgia, and has ...
