Major League Notebook: May 13

Here's what's happening around baseball on Thursday May 13, 2010: • The Taylor Hooton Foundation awarded commissioner Bud Selig with the inaugural "Taylor's Award," an honor presented to an individual for his efforts in educating American youth on the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs. • Fresh off six no-hit innings Wednesday night, Stephen Strasburg's next start was announced. It will come next Tuesday at Rochester. That gives Strasburg an extra day of rest to recover, and robs fans in Pawtucket of a chance to see him. • The owners of the site where the movie "Field of ...

Major League Notebook: May 1

Here's what's happening around baseball on Saturday, May 1, 2010: • May Day might as well have been mayday for Tigers manager Jim Leyland. With the calendar flipping to the new month, a new law went into effect in Michigan that requires public work areas to be smoke-free. That includes Leyland's Comerica Park office, and while you would expect the legendary puffer to be a tad upset about the new regulations, Jason Beck notes that the manager has accepted his new reality without much of a fight. "I'm a law-abiding citizen. That's just the way it is," Leyland said after Friday's game. ...

The Pickup Artist: Eye Pods

The Pickup Artist: Eye Pods

Need help navigating the waiver wire each week? Let the Pickup Artist be your guide. Infielders Alcides Escobar (SS, MIL) – 24% Pay no attention to Escobar's .208 average and zero swipes through seven contests. Not only is he seeing the ball extremely well (2/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 26 plate appearances), but he's been a bit unlucky (.227 BABIP, 27.3% line drive rate). If you're looking for 25-30 stolen bases and a decent average to boot, don't let this opportunity pass you by. Remember, it's about grabbing that player before they take off, not afterward. Always Be Closing: Brian Fuentes to the Disabled List

Always Be Closing: Brian Fuentes to the Disabled List

The old adage that 30 to 40-percent of the opening day closers will not remain in that job all season usually rings true. On Wednesday, Brian Fuentes did his part to maintain the validity of that statement as the Los Angeles Angels placed him on the disabled list. Fuentes has a strained back --an injury that occurred on April 6 when the closer tweaked a muscle lifting weights -- and will spend some time on the 15-day disabled list. The move is retroactive, making Fuentes eligible to come off of the DL on April 21. Getting the first opportunity to replace Fuentes will be Fernando Rodney, who ...

Mike Gonzalez: Temporary Implosion or Permanent Failure?

Mike Gonzalez: Temporary Implosion or Permanent Failure?

Starting the season with two blown saves in three chances doesn't normally cost a closer his job, but when that stopper throws just 28 of 60 pitches for strikes to go along with four walks and a wild pitch, a temporary break from ninth-inning duty is probably a good thing. Clearly, Mike Gonzalez is not the same guy who had a 2.42 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 90 Ks in 74 1/3 innings with the Braves last season. At least not at the moment he isn't. His problems started in March, where the 31-year-old closer missed some time with back stiffness before posting a 5.14 ERA and pedestrian 6/4 ...

Fantasy Baseball 2010 Preview: Orioles

With fantasy baseball season on the horizon, it's time to preview each individual team. Perennial also-rans in the American League East, the Baltimore Orioles stand right on the precipice of contending with the free-spending Yankees and Red Sox, thanks to an unbelievably talented group of youngsters that are close to hitting their collective stride. The projected 2-3-4-5 hitters in the lineup average just a shade over 25 years old, while two elite pitching prospects have started to sow their oats in the rotation. While it would be wishful thinking to expect this team to compete in 2010, the ...

Roto Rush: Six Hits for Adrian Gonzalez

Poppin' out the box scores and right into your cubicle, the Roto Rush is your double espresso shot of fantasy baseball advice every weekday.Mired in the middle of a quite reprehensible offense, Adrian Gonzalez had been struggling at the plate for quite a while. Sure, he was still hitting home runs and drawing walks, but his batting average from May 1 to August 9 was an atrocious .228 in 298 at-bats. He hadn't had a multiple hit game since July 29 and hadn't had more than two hits in a game since June 18. Tuesday night, Gonzalez went 6-6, giving him more hits in one night than the rest of ...
