Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!President Barack Obama said Thursday he hoped that Republican support this week for a near $18 billion jobs bill would lead to further bipartisan cooperation as the country tries to dig itself out of what he called "the great recession that we've gone through." "This isn't a game we're playing here," Obama said as he prepared to sign the bill in a Rose Garden ceremony. Efforts to grow jobs "are about the people in this country who are out of work and looking for a job; they're about all Americans, of every race and region and age, who've shared their stories with me over the last year. ... ...
Prime Minister Brian Cowen of Ireland didn't come up short on the blarney during his visit to the White House on Wednesday. "We decided to come on a quiet week," Cowen told President Barack Obama. "We knew there wasn't much going on." No, not much, just a critical juncture for health care reform and passage of an $18 billion jobs bill. Cowen, who wore a sprig of shamrock in his lapel, knew about that, of course. He also knew that the Irish prime minister has for many years been a welcome guest at the White House on St. Patrick's Day. The taoiseach (first chief) began his day with a ...
(Feb. 24) -- I'm no big fan of Harry Reid. Under his "leadership," it seems as if the Senate has had no leadership at all. His lack of arm-twisting and pitiful pandering to gain votes is probably a major reason there's no new health care law right now. To be honest, the guy's manner and appearance just do not scream leadership. Especially when compared to the legend of old LBJ, backing people into walls, pounding fingers into their chest and telling them what they were and weren't going to do on the Senate floor. Reid's begging and deal making just seems so white bread in comparison. Are the ...
(Feb. 23) -- It didn't take long for the newest member of the Senate to anger some of the people who cheered his election victory just last month. Scott Brown's vote Monday afternoon helped kill the GOP filibuster against Majority Leader Harry Reid's $15 billion job creation bill. Brown wasn't the only Republican to break party ranks on the key procedural vote. Maine moderates Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe also voted to advance the bill. So did George Voinovich of Ohio and Kit Bond of Missouri -- both of whom are retiring. Nebraska's Ben Nelson was the only Democrat who voted against Reid's ...
WASHINGTON (Feb. 21) - The top Republican in the Senate said Sunday that GOP lawmakers "may well" vote for a jobs bill this week. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., prefers a costlier version drafted with GOP input and he didn't commit his support to advance the legislation on Monday to a final vote this coming week. The pending measure would provide businesses that hire the unemployed a one-year break from payroll taxes and a $1,000 tax credit if those workers stay on the job for a full year. The cost is estimated at $13 billion. The measure would extend a tax break for small businesses buying ...
