Joe the Plumber Elected to GOP Post in Ohio

Joe the Plumber, who became a household name during Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, has been elected to a Republican Party post in Ohio. The man -- Samuel Wurzelbacher -- is now a party committeeman, one of 400 who oversee the GOP in Ohio's Lucas County, The Associated Press reported. He won his spot by a 38-23 vote in his Toledo precinct. The committee he'll serve on meets only a few times a year to elect the county chairman and set the local party agenda. During the '08 presidential race, Wurzelbacher was hailed by some Republicans as a symbol of middle-class America after ...

Why the British Elections Fascinate This American

Why the British Elections Fascinate This American

By any measure, the British general elections on May 6 are shaping up to be a real nail-biter. The race is very competitive. The outcome is highly uncertain. The implications for Britain's future are profound. And for this American citizen living in London, at least, it's one of the most engaging electoral contests I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong. Like many Americans, I was captivated by the 2008 American presidential race. I understood that a lot was at stake on policy terms. I described how -- in an article I did from London that year -- Americans of all political stripes and classes ...

Joe the Plumber: McCain Used Me

Joe the Plumber became a household name during Sen. John McCain's 2008 campaign, but now the man also known as Sam Wurzelbacher has harsh words for the former Republican presidential candidate. "I don't owe him s---," Wurzelbacher said about McCain over the weekend. "He really screwed my life up is how I look at it." Wurzelbacher made the comments at a campaign event for state Republicans in Pennsylvania, according to radio reporter Scott Detrow "McCain was trying to use me," Wurzelbacher said. "I happened to be the face of middle Americans. It was a ploy." He went on to say McCain "is no ...

Joe the Plumber: A Campaign Issue Again

Joe the Plumber: A Campaign Issue Again

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, aka "Joe the Plumber," first caught our attention in October 2008 when he met and questioned then-Sen.Barack Obama, who was campaigning in his Toledo neighborhood, about his plan to "spread the wealth." Now, Joe the Plumber has become a defining issue once again, this time in the 2010 race for attorney general in Wurzelbacher's home state of Ohio. Last year, Wurzelbacher became a symbolic "everyman" -- at least for conservatives -- after Sen. John McCain mentioned him several times during a nationally televised presidential debate. McCain referenced him so many ...

Anti-Gay Marriage NOM Uses Children as Human Shields

Anti-Gay Marriage NOM Uses Children as Human Shields

While this new ad from the National Organization for Marriage (or LATENT) comically reminded me of Mr. Show with Bob and David's "What's a Gagortion?" sketch, it's also the latest example of an emerging trend: using children as cover for bigotry. Here's the ad: (h/t Jason Linkins)Just last night, I wrote about Joe the Plumber taking a similar tack, ...

Joe the Plumber on Man-Kissing, Book Fail, and His Fifteen Minutes

I'll say this for Joe the Plumber, he packs a lot into one video clip. When we last left Joe, he was being disowned by Elisabeth Hasselbeck for his remarks about queers. Now, he tells a local TV station that he will totally mess up your toilet if he catches two dudes kissing: ...

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Uninvites Joe the Plumber From Around Her

It's a new weapon in the war of words, but Elisabeth Hasselbeck has rescinded any and all RSVPs, within her personal radius, from Joe the Plumber. The provocation for this most grievous penalty? Joe's remarks about "the queers":What will happen next? Will Joe ...

Joe the Plumber Leaving the Republican Party?

Joe the Plumber Leaving the Republican Party?

In the words of Sarah Palin's speech writers, "Say it ain't so, Joe!" Time magazine reports that Joe the Plumber (does anybody care what his real name is anymore?) is readying to bolt from the GOP:Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, tells TIME he's so outraged by GOP overspending, he's quitting the party -- and he's the bull's-eye of its target audience. Wow, I guess Matt Lewis gets his wish. So, the incredible shrinking party just got even smaller. After catapulting Joe to stardom in front of Republican audiences, I wonder how John McCain feels at the news of this latest ...

Top 10 Most Annoying Republicans

Top 10 Most Annoying Republicans

All this talk about Sen. Arlen Specter's defection -- and the instant karma that ensued -- got me fantasizing about other Republicans who ought to follow him out the door. The following list is by no means comprehensive -- and I do reserve the right to amend it -- but for now, these are the 10 Republicans who annoy me most ... 1. Kathleen Parker - If you've heard of Kathleen Parker, it is probably because of her now-famous early criticisms of Sarah Palin. The defining column came in September 2008, when she condescendingly wrote: "Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she ...
