Guilt by Association

Guilt by Association

In philosophical parlance, it is known as the "Bad Company Fallacy." Guilt-by-association posits that if you befriend someone who has questionable beliefs, then, by definition, you too have questionable beliefs. This "company you keep" critique has been a running theme in this year's race for the White House, and it exploded this week when Sarah Palin and John McCain decided to try refocus Barack Obama's associations with William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright into a central theme of their campaign. Obama has fired back with McCain's involvement in the Keating 5 scandal, and, in terms of ...

Another Nutjob Preacher!

Another Nutjob Preacher!

Another day, another nutjob preacher denounced on the campaign trail. You might have thought that after Jeremiah Wright, John Hagee, and Rod Parsley, we'd be granted a YouTube respite from these not-so-great-moments-in-pulpitry. And you'd be wrong. Meet Father Michael Pfleger, the latest holy man to be dropped, hot-potato-style, by a presidential hopeful. Have a gander at the remarks he made about Hillary Clinton at, where else, Trinity United Church of Christ.Oy vey! What is it with these guys? Why didn't they all just go to theater camp and try for a bit role in "Hamlet"? Here's Barack ...

McCain, TV Preacher Unendorse Each Other

McCain, TV Preacher Unendorse Each Other

Well at least Rod Parsley, leader of a conservative Christian megachurch in Columbus, OH, gives as good as he gets. After saying Friday that he would not withdraw his endorsement of Sen. John McCain, pastor Rod Parsley has changed his mind. The pastor of World Harvest Church, in the Canal Winchester area, issued a statement almost identical to one he had sent late Friday night, but with one key change: the addition of the sentence "Therefore I withdraw my endorsement." Spokesman Gene Pierce wouldn't shed light on Parsley's decision, saying only "this statement is a clarification on ...

McCain Disses Preachers

McCain Disses Preachers

It has become a leitmotif of this year's race for the presidency: Kooky preacher spouts off and is publicly dropped by political candidate. The latest edition of preacher hot-potato comes in the form of a twofer. John McCain has made an about face, and, in what might be called a preemptive move had he not actively courted the endorsement of the preachers in question, he has now rejected the endorsement of ministers John Hagee and Ron Parsley. McCain's story is an odd one. Here is a man who once bravely repudiated Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson as "agents of intolerance," only to later buy ...

Pander-Fest '08

Pander-Fest '08

The following definitions come to us from the Oxford English Dictionary:pander v. 1. trans. To act as a pander to: to minister to the gratification of (another's lust).2. To lay the pander, to sub-serve or minister to base passions, tendencies, or designs. For another dimension of just what it means to "pander," we might also consult a thesaurus and look up the word "politics." Yes, political campaigns are, by definition, all about ministering to the gratification of another's lusts. Paid political consultants are hired to locate our basest desires, so that each candidate can exploit them. It ...

McCain's Spiritual Advisers

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
McCain's Spiritual Advisers

Two of John McCain's self-proclaimed "spiritual advisers" are evangelical leaders with some rather controversial views on religions other than their own. Denise Williams has already detailed the case of John Hagee, the man who has called Catholicism "a cult," and has likened it to "the Great Whore" in Revelation 17. Yesterday, Mother Jones published a bit on another televangelist whose support McCain actively courted, and who has since spoken at McCain rallies. Meet Ohio Minister Rod Parsley. Among the planks in his pious platform is the armed eradication of Islam. Not just it's radical ...

I'm Still Waiting...

I'm Still Waiting...

Question: Why haven't the media or our politicians--who usually have heightened sensibilities about such things--commented on Pastor John Hagee's endorsement of John McCain with the same relish they did when Louis Farrakahn endorsed Barack Obama? The latter endorsement, of course, was not sought or requested, and was wholly and totally renounced, rejected and denounced by Obama. John McCain, on the other hand, has been seeking the endorsement of John Hagee for over a year. Watch below why 66 million US Catholics (I'm one of them), upwards of 6 million gays, or the survivors of the $81.2 ...

The Reality of Recent Religious Endorsements

By  Denise Williams - Politics Daily
The Reality of Recent Religious Endorsements

While we contemplate the actual efficacy of any endorsement conferred on any candidate, one thing is for sure - if it prays it brays. Not much has captured the American media quite so much this past week as the endorsement by the hateful Louis Farrakhan of Barack Obama. An endorsement, I might note, that was not sought by the candidate and was quickly denounced and then rejected. On the other side, which I'm sure you've heard much less about, are two recent religious community endorsements received by John McCain that not only were not rejected, renounced and denounced, but actively ...
