Dan Coats Leads Primary, General Election Rivals in Bid to Return to Senate

Former GOP Sen. Dan Coats, who represented Indiana from 1989 to 1999, holds double-digit leads over rivals both in the race for the Republican senatorial nomination and the general election contest, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted April 22-26 for the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics. As Tuesday's primary nears, Coats had support of 36 percent of likely voters, followed by former Rep. John Hostettler at 24 percent and state Sen. Democratic Rep. Brad Ellsworth, who voted for the health care reform despite strong opposition to it among Indiana voters, trails all three Republicans running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Evan Bayh, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted April 13-14. Former GOP Sen. In the race for the seat being vacated by Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, former Republican Rep. John Hostettler looks for now to be a stronger candidate against the Democratic hopefuls than his rival for the GOP nomination, former Sen. Dan Coats, according to a Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll conducted Feb. 22-24. Hostettler leads Democratic Rep. Evan Bayh's decision not to seek re-election has given Republican hopefuls a decided advantage in the race for his Indiana seat, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 16-17. Now that Indiana Rep. Mike Pence has ruled out a challenge to Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh Looking Vulnerable in Indiana Senate Race

Two-term Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh is looking vulnerable in Indiana where he is polling under 50 percent when matched against three possible Republican challengers, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Jan. 21 and 24. Five-term Republican Rep. Mike Pence is not an announced candidate for the race but Politico reports that national GOP leaders are trying to recruit him.
