Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Republican and Democratic lawmakers continued on Sunday to cautiously dance around what has emerged as the outlines of a deal on extending the Bush-era tax cuts. But their remarks appeared to signal that both sides were likely to reach a compromise that kept the tax cuts for all, including the wealthy, but not on a permanent basis, as well as extending unemployment benefits. Coming a day after Senate Republicans blocked Democratic efforts to permanently extend the tax cuts for all but high-income earners, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell predicted on NBC's "Meet the Press" that "we're ...
(Nov. 17) -- The lame duck Congress faces two important decisions and should not let partisan politics get in the way of national interest. First, it needs to extend tax cuts for middle-class Americans. Second, it needs to ratify a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Russia. The first is a no-brainer at a time when nearly 10 percent of Americans are unemployed and the recovery from the worst recession in half a century is anemic at best. But the second is also a no-brainer. Especially for those who believe that Russia is still a threat to America two decades after the end of the ...
(July 20)--The "ayes" have it. On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee surprised no one and voted to advance Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court to a full vote on the Senate floor. Thirteen Senators voted in favor of Kagan, and six against. Only Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) crossed party lines, giving Kagan his approval. "No one spent more time trying to beat President Obama than I did except maybe Senator McCain," Graham said in explaining his vote. "But I understood -- we lost, President Obama won. The Constitution in my view puts an requirement on me not to replace my judgment ...
President Barack Obama will send 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to tighten security, it was announced Tuesday. The news broke just after Republicans introduced a measure to increase border patrols. Obama is also expected to ask for $500 million to support the Guard's activities. The troop announcement, made by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), followed a rare trip by Obama to Capitol Hill, where he appealed for Republican senators' support on his legislative priorities before the midterm elections. "It was a good, frank discussion on a whole range of issues," Obama ...
(Dec. 2) - Some people are so upset about Michaele and Tareq Salahi crashing the White House State Dinner that they want the publicity-hungry socialites prosecuted. While there's new evidence that they weren't invited, it's not clear whether they did anything illegal. The Salahis were not on the guest list for last week's party, according to the White House and Secret Service. And although they've said they believed they were invited, newly released e-mails undercut the couple's claim. News that they were escorted out of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's awards dinner a month ago ...
A little advice to any insurance agents out there trying to lure Sen. John Kyl (R-Ariz.) away from the government-subsidized congressional health plan to a private plan: Don't pitch him anything that includes prenatal coverage -- Sen. Kyl won't be requiring it. As David Sessions wrote, in a hearing before the Senate Finance Committee Friday, Sen. Kyl criticized legislation that would bar insurance companies from excluding some benefits. After Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) complained that 60 percent of health insurance companies refuse to cover prenatal care, Sen. Kyl responded: "First of ...
As positions in the Senate hardened on health care reform earlier this year, Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) asked Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) to brainstorm a possible compromise between liberal Democrats and Republicans. Conrad's solution? A "co-op" plan that a moderate could love, with non-profit hybrids. Co-ops would expand insurance coverage to more Americans without creating a government agency, which Republicans oppose, but also would not throw more money at the health insurance industry, which Democrats don't want. ...
You've probably read that the both the House and Senate passed credit card reform legislation this week -- and by sweeping margins. The House vote was 361-64, which was impressive enough, until you compare it to the Senate, which voted 90-5.In fact the margin was so wide in the Senate, it had a lot of folks wondering who out there didn't think it was a good idea to eliminate double-cycle billing and predatory rate hikes on the most vulnerable Americans. Heck, even Sen. Tom Coburn (R-NRA) voted in favor of the bill-- albeit only after amending it to usher handguns into national parks.Well here ...
President Obama's choice to be the nation's chief law enforcement officer, Attorney General nominee Eric Holder, won approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee today in a lopsided 17-2 vote. That much was not surprising. His nomination will now be considered by the full Senate; where despite some questions about his role in the Clinton Justice Department, he will likely be confirmed. What is surprising, however, is the pledge that Holder reportedly made to Republican Senators on the Judiciary Committee to gain a majority of their support. Holder promised not to bring prosecutions against ...
