Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The general election race for the Senate in Nevada began about a half-second after Sharron Angle won the Republican nomination, and one thing was immediately clear: This would be a national spectacle even if Harry Reid were not the majority leader of the U.S. Senate. Get ready to re-experience every ill-advised remark Reid has ever made, and get familiar with every odd position Angle has ever taken. Trust me, there is no shortage of either. This is a choice between someone who has said Capitol tourists smell and President Obama has "no Negro dialect," and someone who laments that alcohol is ...
President Barack Obama will send 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to tighten security, it was announced Tuesday. The news broke just after Republicans introduced a measure to increase border patrols. Obama is also expected to ask for $500 million to support the Guard's activities. The troop announcement, made by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), followed a rare trip by Obama to Capitol Hill, where he appealed for Republican senators' support on his legislative priorities before the midterm elections. "It was a good, frank discussion on a whole range of issues," Obama ...
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and several other Republican senators Thursday criticized remarks by Mexican President Filipe Calderon, who told a joint session of Congress that the recently passed Arizona immigration law amounts to racial profiling and called on lawmakers to pass comprehensive immigration reform. McCain, who led the doomed immigration reform effort in 2006 but is now calling for National Guard troops to help police the U.S. Mexico border, called Calderon's comments on his state's immigration law "unfortunate and disappointing." The law makes it a crime in Arizona to be without ...
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is insisting the Senate review documents from Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan's time in the Clinton administration before holding a confirmation hearing. Kagan served as both a lawyer and policy adviser to President Bill Clinton. Cornyn said the 160,000 pages the White House has requested from the Clinton Presidential Library are essential to determining Kagan's judicial views and opinions. "I think it would be a mistake to hold the hearing until we have a chance to see those documents and any other documents that might exist," said Cornyn. "Because she has no ...
Eight senators down, 92 to go. That's the count as of Thursday morning for the arduous and sometimes awkward road that Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan must travel as she meets with the 100 U.S. senators who hold her professional fate in their hands. On Wednesday, the current solicitor general sat down with the most senior members of the Senate -- five Democrats and three Republicans -- for meetings that ranged from an hour-long murder board with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) to a relatively casual meet-and-greet with Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.). Kagan continues her march on the Hill ...
Now that Charlie Crist has left the Republican Party to mount an independent run for Senate, Texas Sen. John Cornyn wants a refund of all the money his political action committee donated to the Florida governor. Cornyn, who runs the GOP campaign operation for the Senate, expects a number of Republicans to demand money back from Crist because they don't want his independent bid to be financed with party funds, The Wall Street Journal reported. "People have already asked for their money back and I expect that to continue," Cornyn said Thursday. "I certainly will request the money I donated to ...
Two more senators, John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), said Friday they'll vote to oppose Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court. Both Cornyn and Hatch sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where each quizzed the judge last week on her views of abortion and the Second Amendment, and on her past statement that she would hope a "wise Latina" would make better judgments than a white man.In his speech on the Senate floor, Cornyn said Friday that although Sotomayor had performed well during the nomination hearings, she had expressed "very radical ideas" about the role of a ...
Conservatives pounced on Monday morning's Supreme Court reversal of the Ricci firefighters case as a unanimous indictment of the work of Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Sotomayor sat on a three-judge panel that earlier ruled in favor of the city of New Haven in the reverse-discrimination case, which the Court overturned by a 5-4 vote this morning. In two instances, one by Justice Scalia in his concurrence and another by Justice Ginsberg in her dissent, the Court said that the case before the 2nd Circuit should have been remanded to the district court for more facts to consider, rather than simply ...
If Al Franken wins the election recount case that is currently before the Minnesota Supreme Court, the Republican Party is ready to fight for their candidate, Norm Coleman, all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court."The United States Supreme Court has said we need uniform state standards in elections. This is about the constitutional rights of Minnesota voters," Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said. Cornyn said the case should go to the nation's highest court, if necessary. "This is about the legitimacy of elections." The senator chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee and answered questions ...
There has long been tension between Republican leaders and movement conservatives, but efforts to elect Republicans in 2010 are doing nothing to bring the sides together. When Senator Arlen Specter switched parties, several prominent Republican leaders immediately urged Governor Tom Ridge, a Republican moderate, to run. It seems they weren't content to support the more conservative former Congressman Pat Toomey -- who was already in the race. Even now, many Republicans are searching for a moderate who is capable of winning the primary. Despite polling that shows him competitive -- and the fact ...
