As Ohio Goes, So Go the Midterms -- and Possibly 2012

As Ohio Goes, So Go the Midterms -- and Possibly 2012

In this "swingiest of swing states," as one Ohioan described the Buckeye State to me recently, no political party has a lock on voters' affections. Politicians have to earn it, election by election. And right now, the advantage that Democrats won in 2008 with Barack Obama's victory and the pickup of U.S. and state House seats is seriously threatened. If current polls are correct and the election were held tomorrow, it's a good bet the GOP would sweep the board in Ohio, taking back the governorship, at least a couple of U.S. House seats, the state House and hold onto the U.S. Senate seat ...

Senate and Governor Races Shaping Up as Close So Far in Ohio, Illinois

The races for governor and senate in two key Midwestern states -- Ohio and Illinois -- are starting out as close matches but not so in Indiana where GOP senate primary victor Dan Coats has a big lead over his Democratic foe, according to three polls released Friday. In Ohio, Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, coming off his primary victory this week over Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, is statistically tied with former Republican Rep. Rob Portman in their contest to fill the seat of retiring GOP Sen. George Voinovich, with Fisher ahead 43 percent to 42 percent with 4 percent preferring ...

Ted Strickland Has Shaky Lead Over John Kasich in Ohio Governor Race

Ohio's Democratic governor, Ted Strickland, is holding on to the lead he had last month over former Republican Rep. John Kasich, running ahead of Kasich by 44 percent to 38 percent with 17 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted April 21-26. But the poll numbers suggest some causes of concern for him. Last November, the two had been tied at 40 percent each, but in February and March, Strickland led by five points. Strickland, like many governors of states buffeted by the bad economy, had seen his favorability ratings suffer, but they appear to have recovered. ...

GOP's Kasich Leading an Unpopular Strickland in Ohio Governor Race

Former Republican Rep. John Kasich is leading Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland 42 percent to 37 percent with 21 percent undecided in Ohio's gubernatorial race, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted conducted March 20-21. The margin of error is 3.9 points. While 50 percent of voters at this point don't know enough about Kasich to express a favorable or unfavorable opinion of him, Strickland is suffering a high job disapproval rating, which seems to go along with being a governor nowadays when the bad economy is straining state budgets. Forty-seven percent disapprove of the job ...

Ohio Job and Poll Numbers Against Him, Governor Ted Strickland Makes His Case

Ohio governor Ted Strickland recently gave his last State of the State address before facing a difficult 2010 re-election bid, emphasizing the state's potential for reinvention and growth despite its budget shortfall and 10.9 percent December unemployment rate. Strickland pledged renewal of the Third Frontier Program in 2010, a technology industry-building initiative first conceived under Republican Gov. Bob Taft. "And you have my word on this: I will move heaven and earth to create jobs in Ohio, and I will not rest until it's done," Strickland said. Republicans complained that the speech ...
