New Jersey Legislature Approves Medical Marijuana Use

The New Jersey legislature on Monday made the Garden State the 14th in the U.S. -- but one of the few on the East Coast -- to legalize the prescription of marijuana for chronic illnesses, the New York Times reports. The measure, which would allow doctors to prescribe marijuana to those who suffer with AIDS, Lou Gehrig's disease, muscular dystrophy and other ailments, passed both the General Assembly and the State Assembly on the final day of the legislative session. Marijuana for medical use will be grown in special state-overseen dispensaries. Gov. Jon Corzine said he would sign the bill ...

(Jan. 7) – In a 20-14 vote, New Jersey's state Senate defeated a bill that proposed legalizing gay marriage in the state. The bill was the last chance for the New Jersey Legislature to put a pro-gay marriage measure on the desk of outgoing Democratic Gov. Mel Evans, AP Gay rights supporters reacted with disappointment after the New Jersey state Senate voted down a bill that proposed legalizing gay marriage. ...

Corzine Heads to Caribbean to Recover From Defeat

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has retreated to the Caribbean island of St. Barts to recover from his loss to Republican challenger Chris Christie last week, the New York Post reported Monday. Corzine was seen on the beach in the company of his girlfriend, Sharon Elghanayan. The two arrived on a private plane Friday and are staying in a villa on Flamands Beach. "After eating lunch at a posh restaurant, they took a stroll along the water, then stopped to catch some rays," the Post reports. "The bare-chested multimillionaire sank into a lounge chair with his girlfriend close by." ...

We Get Letters . . . Politics Daily Gives Advice

Dear Politics Daily: I recently lost my job as head of a small but strategically placed East Coast state and am considering my professional and personal prospects for the future. I entered public service relatively late in life after a successful career in finance that ended on an uncomfortable note but nevertheless left me well fixed monetarily. I used a pile of the cash I made to run for office but after winning a job in Washington, my marriage of three decades ended with public accusations from my ex that nearly cost me an election. The next relationship with a high-profile supporter ...

Was the Election About Obama?

Was the Election About Obama?

(Nov. 4) -- Forget what voters told exit pollsters. Tuesday's election is being analyzed as a referendum on President Obama. Republicans Bob McDonnell in Virginia and Chris Christie in New Jersey captured governor's seats that were held by Democrats. Obama won both states a year ago. He campaigned hard for Gov. Jon Corzine in New Jersey and made appearances for Creigh Deeds late in the campaign, despite some bad blood between the Virginia Democrat's campaign and the White House. Many headlines Wednesday morning portrayed the vote results as bad news for Obama. "It sends a clear signal that ...

Christie Beats Corzine in New Jersey

Christie (left), Corzine (center), and Daggett (right) voting in New Jersey. Republican Chris Christie won the New Jersey governor's race, overcoming the huge edge incumbent Jon Corzine had in campaign funds and multiple visits by President Obama to rally Democrats to Corzine's side.Major news organizations called the race for the 47-year-old former federal prosecutor a little more than two hours after the polls closed, based on their reading of the exit polls. With 98 percent of precincts reporting by late Tuesday, Christie was leading in the actual vote, 49 percent to 45 percent. Corzine ...

Voter Numbers, Independent Candidate Are Keys to N.J. Governor's Race

Voter Numbers, Independent Candidate Are Keys to N.J. Governor's Race

It seems like ages, and an endless stream of polls ago, that Republican Chris Christie led the increasingly unpopular Gov. Jon Corzine by 10 points in a race that appeared to be the former U.S. Attorney's to lose, as Corzine found himself sinking under the weight of the state's economy and budget problems. But voters are going to the polls today with all signs pointing to a tight race between the two, with a wild card in the shape of the independent candidacy of Chris Daggett, a former regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, who had worked in the gubernatorial campaigns ...

Pollsters From Both Parties: Republicans Headed for a Good Election Day

Pollsters From Both Parties: Republicans Headed for a Good Election Day

Two leading pollsters from opposite parties agreed Monday that Republicans could sweep big elections Tuesday for governor in both Virginia and New Jersey and a congressional seat in upstate New York. Democrat Mark Mellman said only 12 governors that have run for re-election in the past have had numbers as bad as those of New Jersey Democrat Jon Corzine, whose unfavorable rating tops 50 percent in many polls. Only two of them have won -- Jennifer Granholm of Michigan and now-disgraced Rod Blagojevich of Illinois. "It's a very tough thing to do," Mellman said at a breakfast sponsored by the ...
