Palin Charge of 'Blood Libel' Provokes Controversy

Palin Charge of 'Blood Libel' Provokes Controversy

If Sarah Palin's seven-minute video blaming the media was meant to tamp down the rhetoric in the aftermath of the assassination attempt against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, she may have added fuel to the fire by hitting a jarringly off-note: Within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible. To critics, Palin was reckless in her choice of words because "blood libel" is fraught with historic connotations. Sarah Palin: "America's ...

Will 'Gay' Issue Create a Conservative Schism?

Fresh on the heels of Congress repealing "Don't ask, don't tell," there are reverberations within the conservative movement that have gone largely unnoticed by the media. First (though probably least interesting), is news that the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America will boycott the Conservative Political Action Conference -- the largest gathering of conservatives each year in Washington. Socially conservative groups -- and FRC and CWA are among the more prominent ones -- are upset that GOProud, a conservative gay group, will play a prominent role at the conference, set ...

How Much 'Modesty' Will Republicans Bring to Congress?

How Much 'Modesty' Will Republicans Bring to Congress?

(Nov. 2) -- "We have nothing to fear from letting the House work its will -- nothing to fear from the battle of ideas. ... The result will be more scrutiny and better legislation," John Boehner said in a National Journal interview. With the GOP expecting sweeping gains and control of at least one house of Congress, prognosticators are already guessing how a Boehner-led majority will govern. The specifics, of course, will be determined after the election results are finally tallied in the next days and weeks. The subject, however, is already being heavily debated among Republican leaders and ...

Is Bomb Plot October Surprise or Just the New Normal?

Is Bomb Plot October Surprise or Just the New Normal?

(Oct. 29) -- This afternoon, just four days before the midterm elections, President Barack Obama confirmed the presence of explosives in packages sent to America from Yemen in what appeared to be a coordinated but thwarted terrorist attack. The timing of the news caused some to decry the possibility of an "October surprise." The term "October surprise" usually connotes some sort of foul play, such as the sudden emergence of a political scandal, just in time to influence the outcome of an election. Since 9/11, however, al-Qaida has been frequently said to be have been actively trying to hatch ...

Young Conservatives Air 'Nerdy' Laundry on C-Span Panel

Young Conservatives Air 'Nerdy' Laundry on C-Span Panel

It has been described as "the most awkward C-Span panel" ever. (It probably was). Let me set it up for you . . . National Review's Jonah Goldberg is out with a new book, "Proud to be Right," which is a collection of essays from conservatives under the age of 30 (listen to my podcast with Rachel Motte, one of the young writers featured in the book). During a C-Span 2 "Book TV" panel discussion about the book, libertarian-leaning Todd Seavey and Helen Rittelmeyer, two of the conservative essayists featured in the book, aired some "nerdy" laundry. Watch this must-see "battle of the exes" ...

Republican Reaction to Obama's Iraq Speech: Mostly Negative

Republican Reaction to Obama's Iraq Speech: Mostly Negative

President Obama's speech Tuesday night marking the end of combat operations in Iraq drew a largely -- but not universally -- negative response from Republicans. One particular sticking point for many Republicans was the president's failure to tip his cap to the apparent success in Iraq of the counterinsurgency "surge" strategy -- authored by Gen. David Petraeus and implemented by President George W. Bush over the objections of many Democrats, including then-Senators and presidential candidates Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Sen. John McCain, who ran against Obama in the 2008 general election ...

Should Libertarians Ditch the Republican Party?

Should Libertarians Ditch the Republican Party?

(Aug. 27) -- Between big-government Democrats and populist Republicans, where should libertarians look for allies? Reason magazine recently kicked off a debate on this subject by hosting three different opinions: one from the Cato Institute's Brink Lindsey, one from National Review's Jonah Goldberg and one from tea party organization FreedomWorks' Matt Kibbe. Here's what they had to say and what others said in response. No Home in the Republican Party: "All the contemporary right is good for," says Brink Lindsey, "is checking at least some of the left's excesses, and thank goodness for that. ...

Obama on 'The View': The First Reviews Are In

(July 29) -- On Thursday, President Obama appeared on the ABC talk show "The View," a move criticized by some pundits as being distinctly un-presidential. Comedian and radio talk show host Rosie O'Donnell, who formerly hosted "The View," quipped, "I don't really think sitting presidents should go do fluffy daytime TV shows." Appearing on MSNBC's political talk show "Morning Joe" Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell declared, "I think the President of the United States has to go on serious shows." The White House media team countered that Obama's appearance on "The View" was meant to speak ...

Jonah Goldberg Should School Himself, Not CNN, on Blogosphere

Mark Preston over at CNN wrote an interesting piece, earlier today, about the pitfalls facing liberal bloggers in the Age of Obama. Some highlights: * Mark Preston: Liberal bloggers who cheered on Obama now become watchdogs * Challenge is line from "destructive criticism to constructive criticism," a blogger says * Blogging is to liberals what talk radio has been for conservatives, Preston says * Blogging lets Democrats of all stripes express themselves, says founder of one blog What's interesting is how Ifound out about the story. I was on an email list for ...

Chris Dodd Writes Tougher CEO Pay Caps Into Stimulus

One of my favorite Senators, Chris Dodd of Connecticut, has taken a good idea and made it even better. He wrote in limits on executive pay that far exceed those proposed by President Obama. From WaPo:The bill, which President Obama is expected to sign into law next week, limits bonuses for executives at all financial institutions receiving government funds to no more than a third of their annual compensation. The bonuses must be paid in company stock that can be redeemed only when the government investment has been repaid. With the measure, lawmakers seek to address public outrage over ...
