Despite squabbles with her own party that have hurt her, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer appears to have just one major obstacle before her in the race for the GOP nomination -- and that is whether the popular and controversial Joseph Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County, decides to get into the race. Brewer has a significant lead over the announced GOP candidates, even though it's not an impressive number for an incumbent. Arizona Immigration Law Likely to Factor into Governor's Race

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, an opponent of the tough law cracking down on illegal immigrants signed last week by GOP Gov. Jan Brewer, holds a slight lead over her in his race to win her job, and also runs ahead of other Republicans hoping to get their party's nomination, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted April 23-25. Goddard runs ahead of Brewer by 47 percent to 44 percent with 10 percent undecided, within the poll's 3.4 point margin of error. Democrats' Goddard Leads Two, Trails Two in Arizona Governor's Race

Democrat Terry Goddard, Arizona's attorney general, is leading two potential rivals and trailing two others in the state's gubernatorial race, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted March 16. Goddard tops Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who has been weakened by political feuds with her own party and the state's budget woes. He leads her by 45 percent to 36 percent, with 12 percent preferring another candidate and 7 percent undecided. Fifty-seven percent of voters view Brewer unfavorably.
