Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! No matter what President Obama says in his speech Wednesday about the way forward for health care reform, Democrats know that the only path ahead of them will be technically complicated and politically close to impossible. The reality came into stark relief Tuesday at the Capitol, as Democratic leaders gamed out how to pass health care reform through reconciliation, a budget-related process that requires just 51 votes, rather than 60, to pass the Senate. It also requires the House to become deeply involved in the convoluted legislative process so that the two chambers can agree in advance on ...
Give Adam Brickley credit. As the founder of the "Draft Sarah Palin" blog, he spotted Sarah Palin's potential a year and a half before most Americans knew who she was. His prescience earned him a lot of attention, including an appearance on Colbert, and some love from The New Yorker. So it's not surprising that his recent blog post speculating that Gregg would make an excellent VP choice quickly generated buzz. Blogger Matthew Miller jumped on the idea, taking it to the next level. He argued that Gregg should consider running for president. This, of course, sounds absurd, but should it?Consider ...
Judd Gregg has had a long and successful political career -- he served his state as both a governor and a U.S. Senator. He was one of the leading fiscal minds in the GOP, and like most Northeastern Republicans, he was often willing to put aside ideological differences to work with his Democratic colleagues. Then, the relatively obscure Senator reached national prominence as a pinnacle of bipartisanship by accepting a position in the cabinet of Barack Obama. Everything seemed to be looking up, but then something happened that would derail this remarkable narrative -- Judd Gregg was unplugged ...
Let's face it friends. We've all done things we'd sooner forget than acknowledge. Some of us might have shot off our mouths when we were on the sauce. Others might have a few run-ins with ol' Johnny Law. Still others have accepted cabinet positions we didn't want and then sheepishly backed away. For those of you in that last category, we suggest you follow the example of Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH), who boldly brushed aside his sordid past yesterday by stabbing his would-be-future-boss in the proverbial groin...New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg-- the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee who ...
White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod says that picking a cabinet isn't like American Idol:Like the headline says, though, it kinda is. Maybe Axelrod has never watched American Idol. There's a list as long as Tim Geithner's tax itemizations of American Idol contestants who have been forced to withdraw for one reason or another. As a result, Idol's producers have been criticized for their poor vetting skills. There was Frenchie Davis, who was forced to withdraw when it was discovered that she had posed topless for some website. We should thank our lucky stars that Bill Richardson only had a ...
Via Wonkette, here's some video of President Obama giving a speech to commemorate the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. But the events of the present day found their way into his remarks, including a pretty funny joke about the apparent difficulties of finding a Secretary of Commerce. Watch: ...
Tommy has a good take on the Judd Gregg matter. And Andrew Sullivan is positively all over this story. For me, the declaration of total war by the GOP on Obama, even in the face of the country's economic ruin, brought to mind the following scene from Edward Albee's classic drama "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."So much for bi-partisan overtures. Republicans are threatening to ex-communicate the three who betrayed them in the stimulus fight, and came after Gregg with a vengeance. Remember, it was Gregg who reached out to Obama for the Commerce job. And Gregg who praised the principles of the ...
Judd Gregg's withdrawal as nominee for Secretary of Commerce add punctuation to something I've known for awhile now. While Gregg, to his credit, was gracious in his withdrawal, he took the words right out of my mouth, sort of:it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a ...
Senator Judd Gregg released a statement saying he could not take the job at Commerce because of the way the Stimulus plan has turned out. This is the second Commerce nominee to withdraw his nomination. The job was originally offered to New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who later withdrew his nomination, citing the distraction over a federal investigation. Full statement follows: "I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing ...
You know, the real tragedy of all of this is that we got my father-in-law Daschle's book for Christmas. Now he read it for nothing. I don't have a lot to say except WTF!?!!!! Please see my rant from day 11. Did Nancy and Tom just completely forget to fill out section IV of the 63 question application? No pluses, 3 minuses and one wash. Kind of. Bad day, President Obama. Check out the running tally and learn more about this list here. Day Event + - = ...
