(Sept. 9) -- A federal appeals court decided today to temporarily lift the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research while it considers an emergency motion filed by the Justice Department. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ruled last month that government funding of embryonic stem cell research violated the Dickey-Wicker amendment, which prohibits federal funding of any research that destroys a human embryo. Government Appeals Ruling Blocking Stem Cell Research Funding

The Obama administration filed papers Tuesday to block a court ruling preventing use of government funds for embryonic stem cell research. "The government is seeking a stay of the court's injunction to prevent the irreparable human and financial harm that could occur if these life-saving research projects are forced to abruptly shut down," Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler told CNN. WASHINGTON (Aug. 23) -- A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked government rules expanding stem cell research, a blow to the Obama administration that could stall potentially lifesaving research.
