Report: Millions Wasted in Food Services at Baghdad Embassy

(Sept. 13) -- The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad paid millions of dollars to a contractor for snacks and meals that weren't eaten, according to a report from the State Department's Office of the Inspector General. The embassy overpaid by more than $2 million, according to the investigation, first reported today by Foreign Policy magazine. The money was paid to KBR, a former Halliburton subsidiary that provides food service to 1,500 embassy employees. "KBR's headcount records from meals consumed do not match dining facility account records, and OIG was unable to reconcile the difference. These ...

Sick Vets Sue Over Trash Fires in Iraq, Afghanistan

(Aug. 6) -- Hundreds of Americans who got sick after working in Iraq and Afghanistan are suing government contractor KBR, claiming they were poisoned by toxic smoke from trash fires on U.S. military bases there, The Washington Post reports today. According to a lawsuit filed in federal court in Maryland, 241 service veterans and contractors are suing the Houston-based firm, which was in charge of burning trash -- including Styrofoam, plastic, solvents, medical waste and even dead animals -- at several American bases before the military limited so-called burn pits earlier this year. Joe ...

Arianna Huffington vs. PolitiFact . . . and Liz Cheney Escapes

Arianna Huffington vs. PolitiFact . . . and Liz Cheney Escapes

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? That's a Latin phrase from the Roman poet Juvenal, which roughly means "Who watches the watchmen?" But what's Latin for "Who fact-checks the fact-checkers?" Recently, there was a tussle between blogger/media titan Arianna Huffington and PolitiFact.com that raises this question. PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning project of the St. Petersburg Times, vets statements from elected officials and others and rates them on its Truth-O-Meter. Appearing on ABC's "This Week" on June 6, Huffington noted that Halliburton, which has had a role in the BP oil spill, ...

Boeing Hired to Botch Another Border Security Project

Boeing Hired to Botch Another Border Security Project

The Bush Doctrine stated that unilateral preemptive war was an option for America's national defense, but that's not the only remnant left behind by the previous presidential administration. There's also the Halliburton Doctrine, which states that if you dangerously botch multiple defense and security contracts, as Dick Cheney's former company and its one-time subsidiary KBR did so often, you still get another shot at government money-- often with no other bids solicited. So who's the current beneficiary of the Halliburton Doctrine? That would be the Boeing Corporation...The U.S. Border Patrol ...

Cheney's Boys Get a Big Contract, Electrocution Deaths Be Damned

When your former boss just finished an 8-year stint as Vice President of the United States, life can be pretty sweet.Indeed, even after numerous congressional investigations, no-bid contracts, and illegal bribes to the Nigerian government, it seems nothing can stop the former Halliburton subsidiary KBR from raking in the cash. Not even electrocuting its own clients...Defense contractor KBR Inc., which is under criminal investigation in the electrocution deaths of at least two U.S. soldiers in Iraq, has been awarded a $35 million contract by the Pentagon to build an electrical distribution ...

Senate Hears Testimony on Contractor Misdeeds

Talk Radio News reports that a Senate committee held a hearing yesterday (clip here) on contracting abuses in Iraq. Senator Byron Dorgan, who chairs the committee, wants to create a new Senate committee to "exercise oversight over contracting abuses related to reconstruction and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." A former KBR employee testified at the hearing about widespread instances of waste, overcharges and illegal activities by KBR managers and employees. The whistle blower also told of officers who withheld ice from troops that were going into the desert. The ice was instead given to ...

Reps Press Mukasey on KBR Rape Case

Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers and Republican Representative Ted Poe sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey requesting the status of the Justice Department's inquiry into the alleged rape of Jamie Leigh Jones, a 22-year-old female employee of Kellogg, Brown & Root by some of her co-workers in Baghdad. Because contractors are not subject to American law in Iraq, there may be no way to hold Jones' attackers accountable. No government agency would confirm any investigation was even taking place. ...
