Kay Bailey Hutchison Staying in the Senate -- for Now

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) announced Wednesday that she will complete the remainder of her Senate term, which does not expire until 2013. Hutchison, 66, said she will stay in the Senate because of her "intense concern" over the direction of the federal government, but noted the choice was not an easy one. "On a personal level, this has been a most difficult decision, but after much deliberation, I have decided to complete my term," she said in her statement. Hutchison has two children, Houston and Bailey, who attend school in Dallas. Her husband lives in Dallas and works as an ...

After Texas Loss, Hutchison Is Down -- but Maybe Not Out in Senate

After Texas Loss, Hutchison Is Down -- but Maybe Not Out in Senate

Republican colleagues in Washington apparently want Kay Bailey Hutchison to swallow her pride after losing the Texas governor's race and remain in the United States Senate, reversing her earlier plan to resign, win or lose in the Lone Star State. "I want her to serve out her term," Politico quoted Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) as saying. "She's a good person and a good senator." Hutchison was clobbered Tuesday night in the GOP primary by incumbent Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who ran an anti-Washington campaign depicting her as a creature of the capital's insular culture. In conceding defeat, she made ...

Rick Perry Wins Texas Gubernatorial Primary

Incumbent Gov. Rick Perry of Texas won a hard-fought and expensive Republican primary Tuesday night, avoiding a runoff in his defeat of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, while former Houston mayor Bill White easily locked up the Democratic nomination. Hutchison conceded just before 9:30 p.m. central time, urging her supporters to back Perry. "Our party must come together, we must put aside our differences," the three-term senator told a cheering crowd in Dallas. Perry, who is seeking a third full term, won by a margin of about 52 percent to Hutchison's 31 percent, The Houston Chronicle ...

Rick Perry on Kay Bailey Hutchison: 'I Take Her Serious. I Took Kinky Friedman Serious.'

AUSTIN, Texas -- The primary isn't until Tuesday, but in what sure sounded like throat-clearing for her concession speech, Kay Bailey Hutchison said this week that she just can't believe that Gov. Rick Perry managed to get so many Republican primary voters in Texas to see her as this creature of Washington. Perry, who unless he starts channeling Claytie Williams or goes on a killing spree is likely to prevail next week, talked about his bid for a third term in an interview with Politics Daily. I spent six years in Texas in the 80s, so it's not like I've never heard a darlin' or a ...

Medina Gaffe Could Help Perry Avoid Run-Off in Texas Governor Race

Medina Gaffe Could Help Perry Avoid Run-Off in Texas Governor Race

Texas Gov. Rick Perry remains comfortably ahead in the three-way race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination but doesn't have enough of a lead to avoid a runoff in the March 2 primary, according to a poll for Texas newspapers conducted Feb. 2-10. However, that could change in the wake of remarks made last week by conservative activist and Tea Party favorite Debra Medina. Asked on the Glenn Beck radio show if the American government had any involvement in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Medina answered: "I think some very good questions have been raised in that regard. There's some very good ...

Another Poll Shows Perry Ahead of GOP Pack in Texas Governor Race

Another Poll Shows Perry Ahead of GOP Pack in Texas Governor Race

The latest survey of the Texas governor race pretty much tracks with other recent ones: Gov. Rick Perry is leading with 45 percent in the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison at 21 percent and Tea Party-favorite Debra Medina close behind at 19 percent. Sixteen percent are undecided. The poll, conducted Feb. 1-7 by the University of Texas for the Texas Tribune, said that if the undecideds had to make a choice, 51 percent would go with Perry, 34 percent for Hutchison and 15 percent for Medina. Fifty-one percent of Perry's backers say they support him "very ...

Insurgent Debra Medina Shakes Up GOP Governor Race in Texas

Insurgent Debra Medina Shakes Up GOP Governor Race in Texas

Following a series of elections where conservative activists, Tea Partiers, disgruntled independents and energized Republicans have shaken things up, a political neophyte in Texas is riding that same kind of wave and may affect the outcome of the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. Debra Medina, who was a former GOP county chairman and runs a medical billing business, has pulled within four points of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who, like Medina, is mounting a primary challenge to Gov. Rick Perry, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Feb. 4-7. (Read the Houston ...

GOP Upstart Medina Makes Strong Showing in Texas Governor Match-Up

Texas Gov. Rick Perry and his rival for the gubernatorial nomination, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, both are leading Democrat Bill White, the former Houston mayor, in general election match-ups -- as was the case in a previous survey -- but the surprise is that Debra Medina, a favorite of conservative and Tea Party activists, also makes a strong showing against White, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 1. Perry leads White 48 percent to 39 percent with 5 percent preferring some other candidate and 8 percent undecided. Bailey leads him 49 percent to 36 percent with 7 percent ...

Perry Slightly Increases His Lead Over Hutchison in Texas Governor Race

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is leading Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison by 44 percent to 29 percent in the race for their party's gubernatorial nomination, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 1. In January, Perry had led 43 percent to 33 percent. Former Wharton County Republican chair Debra Medina, a favorite of libertarian, conservative and Tea Party activists, had the backing of 16 percent. She gained 4 points since the last poll, which is the same amount of support that Hutchison lost. Last November, Medina's support stood at 4 percent. In the current poll, another 11 percent were ...

ESPN Analyst, Football Star Craig James Eyes Senate Run in Texas

ESPN analyst Craig James told a Dallas television station Thursday that he is considering a run for Kay Bailey Hutchison's Senate seat when she vacates it later this year."I'm a Texan. I'm concerned for our country," he said. "I disagree with the approach that we're having, things that are taking place, and so whatever door opens up, I'll look at it, if and when it opens up." He describes himself as a conservative and says he is worried about government involvement in business and health care. "Why does the government have to be involved in everything we do?"James has deep roots in Texas, ...
