Kentucky Elections

Kentucky

On the night he won the Republican Senate primary, Rand Paul declared he was delivering "a message from the tea party." The movement embraced the first-time candidate because of the libertarian, limited-government views he shares with his father, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. Tea party support helped Rand Paul defeat GOP establishment candidate Trey Grayson in the May primary and advance to face Democrat Jack Conway in November. The winner will succeed Republican Jim Bunning, who is retiring after two terms in the Senate. All six House members from Kentucky are favored to win re-election. There is no governor's race in the Bluegrass State this year. McCain won Kentucky in 2008.
